Rhino Research Internship - South Africa

Job Description

WildComm Research Stations is a conservation organisation located in South Africa, committed to hands-on research, education, and training for the next generation of conservationists. We are situated within a private reserve, home to two of the Big Five, rich birdlife, and diverse vegetation. We focus on providing interns with direct, meaningful opportunities to engage in wildlife conservation efforts.

Project Description

Are you passionate about wildlife conservation and eager to gain hands-on experience in the field? Join our Rhino Research Project and contribute to important studies focused on the behaviour and ecology of one of Africa’s most iconic and endangered species. As an intern, you’ll be part of a dedicated team conducting field observations and collecting data to support long-term conservation efforts. This is a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of rhino behaviour while making a meaningful contribution to their protection.

Key Responsibilities

As an intern, you will:

  • Work alongside experienced staff and field rangers

  • Monitor rhino behaviour through direct observation and data logging

  • Collect and analyse data on social interactions, movement patterns, and habitat use

Who We’re Looking For

Prior experience is not needed. We’re looking for motivated individuals who:

  • Are responsible and eager to make a meaningful impact

  • Can work well both independently and within a team, under the guidance of field coordinators

  • Are comfortable working long hours outdoors in challenging weather conditions

  • Possess a reasonable level of fitness—fieldwork is conducted entirely on foot, and while some physical fitness is needed, strength and stamina will naturally build over time through the work itself

Duration

Flexible | Longer stays are encouraged for a more enriching and immersive experience.

Your contribution helps support critical conservation work.

The conservation fee also includes:

  • Training

  • Research equipment access
