Overview
The Environmental Engineer supports environmental compliance, sustainability, and risk management initiatives across operations. This role works closely with operations, engineering, and leadership to ensure regulatory compliance while driving continuous improvement in environmental performance. The ideal candidate has experience in heavy industry, metals, mining, or manufacturing environments and is comfortable working in both office and field settings.
Key Responsibilities
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations related to air, water, waste, and land use
• Manage environmental permits, reporting, and agency communications
• Monitor and analyze environmental data including emissions, wastewater, stormwater, and waste streams
• Support environmental impact assessments and risk evaluations for new and existing projects
• Develop and implement environmental management plans, procedures, and training programs
• Conduct internal audits and inspections and support external regulatory inspections
• Investigate environmental incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions
• Collaborate with operations and engineering teams to integrate environmental considerations into process design and improvements
• Support sustainability initiatives including waste reduction, recycling, energy efficiency, and emissions reduction
• Maintain accurate documentation and records in accordance with regulatory and company requirements
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field
• 3 to 8+ years of environmental experience in metals, mining, manufacturing, chemical, or heavy industrial environments
• Working knowledge of environmental regulations such as Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, and related state regulations
• Experience with air permitting, wastewater management, and hazardous and non hazardous waste programs preferred
• Strong analytical, problem solving, and technical writing skills
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
• Comfortable working in industrial and outdoor environments as needed
Preferred Experience
• Experience supporting copper, metals, mining, or smelting operations
• Familiarity with ISO 14001 or environmental management systems
• Experience interacting directly with regulatory agencies
• Professional Engineer license or EIT a plus
