Invertebrates are key indicators of environmental health and represent the majority of biodiversity within the Soutpansberg Mountains. The Lajuma Research Centre supports long-term biodiversity monitoring to document species presence, distribution, and ecological roles.  Internship Overview Interns assist with surveys targeting a range of invertebrate groups, including insects, arachnids, and other terrestrial invertebrates. Start Date:  April 2027 About This project focuses on small mammal research and species diversity monitoring within a private game reserve. Interns will contribute to species identification, data collection, and ecological monitoring aimed at improving understanding of small mammal diversity, distribution, and habitat use within the reserve. The project framework and methodology are already established; however, interns will take primary responsibility for running the project on a day-to-day basis. Full training is provided at the start of the internship, followed by ongoing guidance and supervision from BBRC staff. The Lajuma Research Centre, in the Soutpansberg Mountains of Limpopo, South Africa, has been a base for wildlife research and conservation for over 20 years. The reserve is home to all five South African primate species, which include the endangered samango monkey ( Cercopithecus albogularis schwarzi ). The Lajuma Research Centre provides a unique opportunity to study an exceptional diversity of birdlife within one of South Africa’s most ecologically varied mountain environments. More than 215 species have been recorded on the reserve, including the purple-crested turaco, narina trogon, cape vulture, violet-backed starling, African fish eagle, crowned eagle, crested guineafowl, and multiple owl species.
