Manice Education Center

The Manice Education Center, located in the pristine wilderness of the Berkshire Mountains in Western Massachusetts, delivers Christodora’s flagship programming to over 850 students per year.  Christodora is a 117 year old non-sectarian, non-profit organization offering high-quality environmental education and leadership training to motivated New York City youth.  
Working together as a supportive and energetic team of outdoor professionals, the Manice Education Center (MEC) leads small co-ed groups of 10-12 students on adventures to discover the surrounding wilderness filled with many streams, beaver ponds, waterfalls, and vistas overlooking New England’s mountain-scape.

The Manice Education Center seeks staff who have an adventurous spirit, have a willingness to learn, have a passion for the outdoors, and enjoy connecting with urban youth.   MEC programs offer low challenge course and teambuilding initiatives, night hikes, extended day trips into the 14,000 acres of surrounding state forests, explorations of aquatic and forest animals and eco-systems, greenhouse and gardening programs, and campfire programs for each group of campers.  Summer programs include backpacking and canoeing expeditions in Southern New England and Eastern New York.

Christodora: Nature Learning Leadership has a new opening for a Summer Ecology Program Director and is seeking teachers or educators with a background in the sciences to lead a discovery-based, research program for high school students in July 2018. This is an opportunity to lead scientific investigations of the forested ecosystems within the 6,000-acres of Great Mountain Forest (GMF) near Norfolk, CT, where the Yale School of Forestry conducts educational research programs. The Summer Ecology Program (SEP) recruits approx. 16-20 motivated high school youth from NYC, presenting a powerful dynamic for direct attention in a small group atmosphere. With input from the GMF foresters and other local experts, the Director leads the group in hikes and other explorations as the students “live and breathe” the scientific method; at the end of the 2-week program student teams present their original research findings to the GMF staff and guests. Students also swim in Tobey Pond and take advantage of nearby community resources including the Norfolk public library and the Yale Summer Music Festival. Position Date Requirements : Must be available to meet with staff, engage with the local community, and design the program experience before training dates. On-Site Training: July 5-7; Program: July 8-23; Closure & Debrief: July 23-24. Key Responsibilities : • Facilitate a fun, engaging, community where urban youth feel comfortable outside and inspired to learn about our natural world. • Provide scientific leadership by mentoring and facilitating all aspects of students’ success with independent research projects and presentations. • Train and manage a team of three staff (1 Educator, 1 Intern, 1 Cook) • Maintain and foster strong community relations by collaborating and engaging with community members and local partnerships. • With the support of Christodora’s administration, direct and manage all program schedules, logistics, and risk management plans including overnight supervision of youth in an outdoor residential setting. Qualifications : • Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline with the ability to lead a student centered and experientially focused research program. • Successful candidates have the ability to lead inspiring field research for inner city high school students. • Energetic and motivated individual with the ability to be flexible and sensitive to the diverse needs of both the program and students. • References, background checks, driver’s license, and a physical are required. • First Aid/ CPR Certification or ability to obtain prior to start or program.
