James City County seeks an individual to perform experienced technical work maintaining and updating a complex and multilevel mapping system, both manually and with the use of computer Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. Involves routine manual and digital geographic information processing and analysis.   Responsibilities : Prepare, revise, and maintain a wide variety of computer-generated maps and cartographic products; perform the research and data collection necessary to compile, draft, digitize, code, query, edit, and prepares computer generated maps for dissemination to members of the County staff, the general public, and private industry. Assist in maintaining a quality public relations program, including map sales and providing technical assistance to County staff, the public and private industry. Transform information from aerial photographs, surveys, and other sources to mapping scale and make changes to County tax map series. Research deeds and plats for correct boundaries, including easements, right-of-way, structures, etc; translate deeds descriptions into property boundaries. Train and coordinate work with GIS and ArcView users. Requirements : Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Cartography, GIS Studies, or related field; or Associate’s degree supplemented by technical level courses in cartography, GIS or related field; considerable related work experience in one or more of these fields (generally 3-5 years). Considerable knowledge of the methods and techniques of drafting and graphic representation; map research, compilations, digitizing, editing, and production; knowledge of computers, plotters, computer GIS technology including ArcGIS; ability to prepare and maintain computer generated maps using proper cartographic procedures; knowledge of programming with ArcObjects using VB, .NET, and Python; knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. Skill in the use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with County staff and the public. Click here  for full job description.
