Job Description The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation ( DCR ) is the state’s lead conservation agency, and it takes a diverse agency to serve a diverse commonwealth.   DCR   protects clean water, natural habitats, access to the outdoors, open spaces, and safe infrastructure. The   DCR   Natural Heritage Division maintains 63 Natural Area Preserves comprising 56,746 acres across the Commonwealth. This division works to identify, protect and steward Virginia’s biodiversity through the cooperation of biologists, ecologists, zoologists, spatial data analysts, conservation planners, and natural areas stewards. The Mountain Region Stewardship Technician will assist   DCR   Natural Heritage staff with the management of Natural Area Preserves ( NAP ) in the Mountain Region of western Virginia. This is a temporary, part-time, hourly position, up to 32 hours per week (no overtime), and no benefits other than worker’s compensation. The schedule is flexible and may include weekends and evenings.The Natural Areas Stewardship Section helps to conserve Virginia’s biodiversity by actively managing over 56,000 acres within the state natural area preserve system. Assist   DCR   Natural Heritage Division stewardship staff with management of natural area preserves in the Mountain Region of western Virginia. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: fireline preparation, service on prescribed burn crews, management of invasive species, trail construction and maintenance, assisting with biological monitoring and mapping, organizing and leading volunteer workdays, maintenance of equipment and shop facilities, trash removal, posting preserve boundaries, public environmental interpretation, and promoting responsible use among visitors to the natural area preserves. Operation of vehicles and equipment such as pickup trucks and trailers, tractors, UTVs, ATVs, chainsaws, pesticide sprayers, hand tools, power tools, and prescribed fire equipment. Minimum Qualifications Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently and set priorities. Good communication skills and the ability to convey the Division of Natural Heritage’s mission to a variety of people. Excellent physical condition and experience working in arduous field conditions. Ability to pass the   NWCG   wildland fire work capacity test (arduous level). Valid state driver’s license. Preferred Qualifications Significant progress towards Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences or natural resources, or equivalent experience.   Certification in First Aid and   CPR .   Basic wildland firefighter training. Special Requirements ABILITY   TO   REGULARLY   WORK   IN   DIVERSE   CONDITIONS  INCLUDING   EXPOSURE   TO   THE   OUTDOORS ,   WEATHER   IN   ALL SEASONS ,   DUST ,   ANIMALS   AND   INSECTS .   ABILITY   TO   PERFORM  HEAVY   MANUAL   LABOR   TO   INCLUDE   STANDING ,   BENDING ,   PULLING ,   CLIMBING ,   AND   FREQUENT   LIFTING   UP TO 25   POUNDS .
