DESCRIPTION The Sustainability Coordinator is a fixed term faculty member who leads implementation of Penn State’s mission of comprehensive integration of sustainability into the University’s research, teaching, outreach and operation to prepare students, faculty and staff to be sustainability leaders. The Sustainability Coordinator works collaboratively with administration, faculty, staff, students and community members to develop, coordinate, and promote effective sustainability initiatives to improve environmental, energy, economic and social sustainability across all functions within the college. Key Responsibilities include : teaches up to four courses per year, two interdisciplinary, project-based courses and two courses in the disciplinary area of the successful candidate, serves as the point of contact for sustainability programs at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, responsible for program leadership and coordination among the various campus departments, improves the effectiveness of the College’s sustainability practices by monitoring best practices related to global sustainable development goals and making recommendations for new sustainability programming and modifications to existing programs, develops educational programming, both formal and co-curricular, around a broad array of sustainability issues, oversees ongoing campus sustainability projects including the student garden, campus food pantry, campus arboretum, walking trails improvement and campus natural area restoration projects (key programs impacting the Wintergreen Gorge and leadership for the “Friends of the Wintergreen Gorge.”), works closely with the Directors of the Schools of Humanities and Social Science, Engineering, Business and Science, as well as college centers and institutes, to coordinate sustainability-related educational and research programs, works closely with the facilities department to develop and implement environmental, energy, waste and supply-chain sustainability programs, works closely with Student Affairs and student organizations on campus to develop and lead sustainability programming, works closely with the Sustainable Food Systems Program Coordinator based at the Behrend campus, serves as the campus representative and liaison to the Penn State University Sustainability Institute at University Park, and coordinates with sustainability counterparts at other Penn State campuses, represents the campus in the Erie community on sustainability issues, writes grants to support sustainability projects and programming, and contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of diverse cultures or backgrounds. Qualifications are as follows : a master’s degree in a discipline related to sustainability (environmental, energy, social or economic sustainability). Ph.D. preferred, 3+ years experience managing projects and administering programs involving multiple, diverse stakeholders, 2+ years experience leading/managing sustainability programs with a demonstrated impact of increasing organizational awareness and implementation of sustainable practices, 1+ years experience teaching at the college level, experience organizing and leading multiple groups of volunteers to accomplish objectives, demonstrated knowledge of sustainability principles including, climate change science, energy and environmental management, social behavior change, and sustainable economic development, demonstrated ability to develop positive relations with multiple stakeholders and to facilitate collaborative planning processes, excellent representational, presentation and writing skills, successful grant-writing experience preferred, demonstrated commitment to and passion for improving sustainability and willingness to work on a flexible schedule that includes evening and weekend work. DESCRIPTION Penn State’s Sustainability Institute seeks to hire a dynamic leader to fill the role of Director of Sustainability Solutions Research. The University aspires to be a leader in research that generates solutions to sustainability challenges. This is a new position and an opportunity for the right individual to catalyze the development of solutions-focused research with faculty from different disciplines in collaboration with businesses, non-profits, governmental organizations, and other interested stakeholders to address sustainability at the campus, local, regional, national, and global scales by leveraging the ongoing research being conducted at Penn State University. This position reports to the Chief Sustainability Officer/ Director of the Sustainability Institute.   The Director of Sustainability Solutions Research will : Provide overall leadership, direction, and oversight for solutions-focused transdisciplinary sustainability programs and research activities across the university; Facilitate the development of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research teams around cross-cutting sustainable development themes (e.g. food-energy-water nexus; health, urbanization, and climate change; economic and cultural resiliency strategies); Operationalize Penn State’s living laboratory concept by identifying campus-based research opportunities in collaboration with the Office of the Physical Plant and Auxiliary and Business Services; Act as an interface internally between and among operations, academic, and student organizations on implementation of cross-unit sustainability solutions; Liaise externally to build partnerships with corporate, NGO, and government partners; Expand undergraduate research opportunities in sustainability; Coordinate capacity-building activities for faculty and research partners; Guide assessment of the impact and effectiveness of sustainability research at Penn State.  The successful candidate will have significant experience working with teams to develop interdisciplinary and multi-investigator proposals for federal agencies, foundations, and corporate partners. Candidates must demonstrate strong team building skills, the ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries, and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
