Position and Duties The Sustainability and Compliance Division is seeking a graduate intern for a minimum of one and up to two years (20-30 hours per week) to support its Wastewater Compliance (WWC) team that ensures ongoing compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit for the San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility. This position directly supports the team responsible for reporting wastewater influent and effluent compliance data for water quality parameters, pollutant reduction programs, and pollutant reduction outreach strategies on a monthly and annual basis. The team is seeking an intern with an interest and background in data management and environmental monitoring. Time would be split between in office and field work. Intern duties may include but are not limited to: compiling data to support WWC programs, reports, and memorandums; data entry of archived data and ongoing collection data; database management; researching to support the group’s programs and projects; assisting in program planning; and other project coordination. Field work includes assisting with: field sampling for water quality aboard a vessel, field equipment preparation for sampling (cleaning and calibration of field equipment, paperwork, and sample preparations), and deploying/retrieving field equipment aboard a vessel and along shorelines. Some lifting, up to 40 lbs, and other physical activities may be required. Desirable qualifications: • Excellent verbal and written communications skills; • Organizational and planning skills; • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills; • Data management experience; • Some environmental monitoring experience; • Be able to work independently or in a team environment; and • Be able to commit to a regular, weekly work schedule. Minimum Qualifications: GRADUATE STUDENT INTERN: Completion of a Bachelor's degree and current enrollment in a Master's degree program from an accredited college or university. Preferred area of study includes but not limited to: Life Sciences/Environmental Studies, Business/Public Administration, Engineering/Architecture, and Planning/Urban Development/Housing. Other areas of study may also be considered. LICENSE: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for some positions.
