Summary Promotes a clean and safe environment through education, inspection, and enforcement related to general sanitation and food protection in assigned areas of the city. Essential Functions Works rotating on-call, inspecting temporary events or responding to calls from Fire department or other City departments during nights, weekends, holidays, and after hours; Conducts routine safety inspections on restaurants/bars, mobile units, day cares, food processing plants, public pools and spas, temporary food service, group homes, foster homes, body art establishments, and smoking establishments; Conducts compliance inspections on facilities with prior violations that can lead to enforcement actions; Investigates environmental/food complaints, reports of food borne illness, and general health nuisances (e.g. sewage & rodent infestation) and non-permitted operations (food service, mobile tattoo units, and smoking facilities); Prepares and presents facility and public education programs on food safety, personal hygiene, aseptic techniques, and safe operations for pools/spas, restaurants, and temporary food vendors; Keeps current with FDA courses on food safety, food borne illnesses, epidemiology, and attends TEHA conferences and FDA classroom educational opportunities to maintain RS, CPO, and CFM certification; Utilizes tablet computers, various software programs, and scientific instruments to complete inspection reports and maintain records. Additional Duties : Conducts plan reviews, pre-inspections, and risk assessments for construction, remodeling of food-service, recreational water, body art, and smoking facilities to ensure compliance on all regulations enforced by Environmental Health; Manages daily and monthly vehicle logs, responsible for maintenance of assigned city vehicle; Responds to city wide emergencies and works rotating on-call to handle department-related emergencies. Coordinates with numerous City departments, e.g. Building Inspection, Health Department, Zoning, Storm Water, Code Enforcement, TABC, TXDSHS, TCEQ, etc.; Performs related work as assigned. Qualifications The position requires a bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or a related field with a minimum of 30 hours of applied science courses.  No specific experience is required; any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:   Valid Current Driver's License Physical Exam Required Knowledge and Abilities Ability to: Make decisions based on Environmental Health rules and regulations as well as scientific research and trends; Educate, enforce, read, and interpret City of Lubbock ordinances, State and Federal law; Work with the public in a diplomatic manner, use conflict resolution skills, tactful persuasion, and professional etiquette; Prepare and complete reports and document evidence of violations; Plan, prepare, and deliver educational presentations to the public; Obtain license as a Registered Sanitarian within 24 months; Obtain Certified Pool Operator certification within 18 months; Effectively manage time and multiple projects.   Physical Requirements Frequently walk during shift Continuously bend during the shift Occasionally kneel during the shift Place arms above, at and below shoulder height Frequently lift and carry up to 25 pounds Occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds Coordinate eye, hand and foot movement in order to operate a vehicle Remember to say you found this opportunity at EnvironmentalCareer.com Remember to say you found this opportunity at EnvironmentalCareer.com
