Since 2008, the City has had a strong presence in the region’s environmental development, and has adopted programs and policies that set the example for neighboring communities to follow. To maintain the significant achievements in the environmental arena, and continue growing sustainably in the future, City Council adopted the 2012-13 Environmental Action Plan (PDF). The Environmental Action Plan covers several programs geared towards helping the City meets its greenhouse gas emission reduction and water conservation goals.

Job The City of Manhattan Beach is looking for an organized and highly self- motivated individual to work closely with the City’s Environmental Programs Manager on our Environmental Sustainability program. Candidates would ideally be interested in climate change mitigation and adaptation, including coastal resiliency, renewable energy, water conservation, and plastic pollution. Ideal candidates will have a science or policy background, and be willing to commit to at least 20 hours per week for at least 6 months. The position will provide exposure to career options within a municipal government, with an emphasis on environmental policy and sustainability. JOB FUNCTIONS: Responsibilities include but not limited to: assisting with the City’s Sustainability Task Force and Sustainability Youth Council; maintenance of Environmental Sustainability web pages; creation of media notices to advertise upcoming programs; outreach and monitoring of businesses responding to existing ordinances; assistance with environmental programs and events; use of computer, Microsoft Office Suite programs and social media applications; interacting with the public in person or via telephone; and assisting in support activities as needed. QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Must be a student in good standing at an accredited college or university with major coursework in public administration or a related field. Training and Experience: No experience is necessary.  NOTE: Those individuals with coursework in environmental science and policy are strongly encouraged to apply.
