The Local Government Commission (LGC) is a nonprofit organization fostering innovation in environmental sustainability, economic prosperity and social equity. The LGC is helping to transform communities through inspiration, practical assistance and a network of visionary local elected officials and other community leaders.
Since 1980 LGC has been a pioneer cultivating innovative local approaches to improving communities including promoting clean energy and waste reduction. In 1991, LGC developed the Ahwahnee Principles for Resource-Efficient Communities, which helped pave the way for the smart growth movement and has since worked to build awareness about the impact land use decisions have on transportation, natural resources, public health, climate change and fiscal strength.
