The Department employs approximately 2000 employees.   The Service Forester position provides professional oversight and expertise in the total forest management program to multiple counties in assigned District to develop, protect, and manage the multiple resources of NC forests.  This includes collecting and analyzing forest data to provide technical advice to landowners concerning reforesting, harvesting, and maintaining or improving forest lands.  The position will also communicate with consulting foresters, as well as other professional state and local government land managers for forestry related technical assistance.  Work will also include writing management plans, drawing maps utilizing computer software, completing and tracking cost-share documents, performing water quality inspections, planning and conducting prescribed burns, and other related duties.    The position must also maintain positive interaction with schools, civic groups, or others via fire prevention and forest management programs.  The position will also be involved in various aspects of fighting wildland fires and may be a member of a NC Incident Management Team.  Will be an operations officer at the district level and will require occasional night and weekend duty.    Occasional heavy lifting required. Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pests,  hunters, intense heat, dust, and smoke.  Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri.  Some work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work.  Wildfire and disaster/emergency response require year round readiness 24/7.   Overnight travel up to 18 continuous days may be required.   *Residency is within 45 minutes commuting time from assigned duty station.        Duty Station location:  737 Smokey Road, Rocky Mount, NC  27804   **Necessary Special Requirements: Must have, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid NC Driver's License.  Telephone required.  Must have or be able to obtain NC Forester Registration.    ***NCFS is an Emergency Response Division – work schedule may require extended hours and/or possible emergency callback. PREFERENCES:      Coursework, knowledge, or experience in several of the following areas:  Forest management and silviculture Management plan writing Wildland fire and/or Prescribed fire Forested wetland and water quality regulations Timber sales, harvesting, and forest products Mapping grade GPS units and ArcMap GIS software Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor s degree in Forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution; or registered by the North Carolina Board of Registration for Foresters. Assistant County Ranger works with County Ranger to administer the County program.  Adherence to all safety policies, wildfire control, insect and disease control, fire training with fire department, function as Initial Attack incident commander or other positions for emergency response, forest fires, and natural disasters, collect forest measurements, inspect tree planting and site preparation work, measure areas for cost-share programs, and other related duties, conduct fire prevention and forest management programs for schools civic groups, and others,  investigate forest fires and take appropriate action based on the reason behind the cause, inspect land disturbing activities and insure adherence to Forest Practices Guidelines related to Water Quality.   Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pests, intense heat, dust, smoke and hazardous debris.
