This is an opportunity to lead scientific investigations of the forested ecosystems within the 6,000-acres of Great Mountain Forest (GMF) near Norfolk, CT, where the Yale School of Forestry conducts educational research programs. The Summer Ecology Program (SEP) recruits approx. 16-20 motivated high school youth from NYC, presenting a powerful dynamic for direct attention in a small group atmosphere. With input from the GMF foresters and other local experts, the Director leads the group in hikes and other explorations as the students “live and breathe” the scientific method; at the end of the 2-week program student teams present their original research findings to the GMF staff and guests. Students also swim in Tobey Pond and take advantage of nearby community resources including the Norfolk public library and the Yale Summer Music Festival. Position Date Requirements : Must be available to meet with staff, engage with the local community, and design the program experience before training dates. On-Site Training: July 5-7; Program: July 8-23; Closure & Debrief: July 23-24. Approx. dates: 12 weeks, May 21th – August 17th (may be adjusted depending upon person’s availability) Most work will be outdoors in the field; some work will be conducted in the BCT office in Brewster Schedule flexible, to be coordinated with the position Supervisor. $5,000 stipend RESPONSIBILITIES : The intern will work independently and as part of BCT volunteer teams to assist in stewarding BCT properties under the supervision of the BCT Land Acquisition and Stewardship Specialist, Activities include: Maintaining trails on BCT’s conservation land, including brush-mowing, weedwhacking, pruning, and clearing debris Creating new trails; improving identified spaces to accommodate public access/use Managing invasive plant species; restoring plant and wildlife habitat Helping locate previously unidentified property boundaries Helping implement Brewster Conservation Day in July QUALIFICATIONS : Willingness to perform physical labor in the outdoors in all weather conditions Valid driver’s license; intern should have own vehicle (mileage to be reimbursed) Ability to operate landscaping power equipment (i.e. weed-whacker, brush mower) Ability to work with minimal supervision, both independently and as part of a team Strong interpersonal skills; flexibility; self-motivation A college student, with enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program in natural sciences, environmental studies, land conservation, or related field preferred Experience with Microsoft Office programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, etc), and ArcVIew GIS mapping is preferred Experience in landscaping, horticulture, or conservation stewardship a plus Remember to say you found this opportunity at EnvironmentalCareer.com

Naturalists at Large is interested in   enthusiastic, self-motivated men and women who demonstrate a good rapport with both young children and teens . Because we work all over the state of California, in different ecosystems and habitats, you should be a person who   learns quickly and who has an inquisitive nature .   Outdoor skills   with   practical experience in rock climbing, canoeing, backpacking, snorkeling and other outdoor activities   are highly desirable as is a   general knowledge about the human and natural history of the western United States . You should have strong group-building and communication skills. You must be safety-oriented and certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR. Proven decision-making skills and the ability to work effectively and constructively in team situations are also required. Previous experience in outdoor or environmental education is a plus.
