Service Description :  Green Iowa AmeriCorps operates through the University of Northern Iowa’s Center for Energy and Environmental Education (UNI CEEE) in Cedar Falls.  The program looking to recruit passionate and motivated individuals for a six-month service experience, beginning February 2020, in one of our service locations throughout Iowa. As a member of our new and existing programs sites, you will have the opportunity to create plans in conjunction with city officials, nonprofit leaders, school districts, and execute projects that will greatly impact the communities we serve. The leadership and empowerment experienced as part of our program will be like no other! Our program hopes to train the next generation of ‘green-collar’ workers through a combination of field trips, presentations, and hands-on learning. Members have the opportunity to build leadership abilities through specific coordinator roles, which allow each member to contribute unique skills to the program. Members have access to free trainings, hands-on skill development, and extensive community engagement. Service Description :  Green Iowa AmeriCorps operates through the University of Northern Iowa’s Center for Energy and Environmental Education (UNI CEEE) in Cedar Falls.  The program looking to recruit passionate and motivated individuals for a six-month service experience, beginning February 2020, in one of our service locations throughout Iowa. As a member of our new and existing programs sites, you will have the opportunity to create plans in conjunction with city officials, nonprofit leaders, school districts, and execute projects that will greatly impact the communities we serve. The leadership and empowerment experienced as part of our program will be like no other! Our program hopes to train the next generation of ‘green-collar’ workers through a combination of field trips, presentations, and hands-on learning. Members have the opportunity to build leadership abilities through specific coordinator roles, which allow each member to contribute unique skills to the program. Members have access to free trainings, hands-on skill development, and extensive community engagement. Our mission is empowering Iowa's communities and school districts to make more environmental, conservation-minded decisions and improvements through direct service work, environmental education, professional development opportunities and volunteer engagement.  Green Iowa AmeriCorps consists of three branches:  Energy & Community, Sustainable Schools and Land & Water Stewards.  Each branch of our program will provide AmeriCorps members with the unique opportunity to enhance their professional development goals, cultivate community-wide relationships, and work toward making Iowa a more sustainable, eco-nomic state. Click   here   to review the recruitment brochure.   Examples of Duties THE POSITION:   We are seeking a dynamic, committed individual that will help the City address one of its most pressing problems, maximizing our ground and surface water resources in a manner that will enable Visalia to grow and prosper in the future. This position will be responsible for oversight of programs, activities and functions relating to water resources management and conservation efforts that directly impact the City of Visalia.  Current challenges facing this Division include: Implementing the Groundwater Sustainability Plan and involvement in the Mid-Kaweah Groundwater Sustainability Act in a time while many of the policies and laws are still being developed and interpreted.  State requirements for indoor and outdoor water use that will likely result in major paradigm shifts in the community. Establishing tracking systems and data evaluation protocols for water usage, recharge, exchanges, developing water markets and other water-related uses. Ever-evolving legislation at both the State and Federal level that could impact water supplies in and around Visalia. Understanding the complex California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) and how their rate structure processes can impact water investments and water rates in Visalia. Qualifications / Requirements THE IDEAL CANDIDATE  will be someone that is pursuing a meaningful career, has a passion for water and resource issues and wants to be on the cutting edge of this developing area. The incumbent must be professional, responsive, innovative, and a self-starter who is dedicated to improving the water supply in our community and can provide thoughtful leadership in this developing policy area. The City is looking for someone who demonstrates they can grasp, analyze and make recommendations about complex issues, while also being able to translate the plans, programs and outcomes needed to the general population.  The ability to establish, build, and maintain strong and effective working relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders is imperative, as is strong communication skills and excellent customer service ethics. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be: Water Resources Manager  Five (5) years increasingly responsible administrative experience, preferably related to water resource management and conservation programs, including supervisory experience. Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major work in geology, hydrology, engineering, environmental studies, business, public administration, or a related field. Water Resources Analyst: Three (3) years increasingly responsible administrative experience. Work experience that provided familiarity with water resource management and conservation programs is desirable. Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major work in geology, hydrology, engineering, environmental studies, business, public administration, or a related field. Special Requirements for both levels: Possession of a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment. 40 hour OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training is desirable. Required within six (6) months of appointment. 8 hour OSHA HAZWOPER supervisor training is desirable. Required within six (6) months of appointment. If hired at the Analyst level, the expectation is that the incumbent will develop the expertise and knowledge to be moved to a Manager level at the discretion of management.
