The City of Lakewood Sustainability Division is looking for an amazing new team member who can combine technical expertise in urban planning and environmental science with creativity and innovation to help us achieve our community's vision for a sustainable future. Under the supervision of the Planning Manager - Sustainability, the Senior Sustainability Planner develops resources, policies, and programs in support of the City of Lakewood Sustainability Plan. The Senior Sustainability Planner provides leadership and coordination of complex projects for the Lakewood community as well as within the municipal organization, and is responsible for tracking and reporting on progress toward achievement of the measurable goals and targets included in the City's Sustainability Plan. MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (This job description does not intend to list every function of the position.) Utilizing expertise in planning theory, sustainability, and systems thinking the Senior Sustainability Planner is required to analyze complex challenges and produce well-thought-out solutions that maximize environmental, economic, and social outcomes for the community and organization. The primary work areas for this position include: Sustainable land-use, development codes, and related policy Zero waste systems, infrastructure, operations, and policy Climate action and adaptation planning Sustainable transportation infrastructure, programs, and operations Sustainable economic development and business program development Strategic communication, education, and outreach Data collection, tracking, and reporting on Sustainability Plan implementation progress The ideal candidate has previous experience developing programs and policies in support of these work areas and the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the complex systems, interactions, and common barriers to implementing municipal sustainability policy. Work includes extensive interaction with the public, preparation of staff reports, development of outreach materials, and oral presentations to community organizations, Planning Commission, and City Council. Community and cross-departmental collaboration and engagement is a requirement for the majority of programs and projects. As such, the candidate must possess strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to facilitate collaboration and consensus building with diverse stakeholders. This position requires effective time management, prioritization and project management skills, and the ability to be flexible and make adjustments when the workload exceeds available staff capacities or when funding is limited. Requires regular and prompt attendance. Work includes frequent evening hours as well as occasional weekend hours. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Education Position requires a Bachelor's degree in sustainability planning, environmental science, urban planning, public administration or another field or combination of fields that fosters an understanding of sustainability from an accredited college. Master's Degree in above-listed fields is preferred. Experience A minimum of four years of varied experience in sustainability-related field is required. Experience in municipal sustainability preferred. Licensure/Certification/Registration Driver's License or MLV Preferred KSA's and Physical/Mental Reqs Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Must be able to interact with others in a positive manner. Has knowledge and experience in the fields of land-use planning and sustainability planning Has experience developing policy and implementing programs related to the primary work the work areas listed above Demonstrates superior oral and written communication Demonstrates a high degree of ethics and integrity Demonstrates creative thinking and problem-solving in the development of plans and programs Has experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds Demonstrates a commitment to incorporating the perspectives of diverse and under-represented communities in the considerations of the impacts and outcomes of decision-making processes. Demonstrates ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team Has experience working effectively with City officials Proficient in Adobe In-Design, Photoshop, Illustrator, ArcGIS, and other commonly used computer programs.
