WORKING CONDITIONS This is a full-time position (35 h/week) and will be based at Conservation International’s headquarters in Arlington, VA, with possibility of working remotely at CI’s office in Seattle, WA, or from Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Mexico or Kenya (applicant should be able to work legally from one of these countries). Frequent travel might be required, often in developing countries. Flexibility in work schedule required in order to accommodate time differences between the Arlington, VA office and international field offices located in multiple time zones. QUALIFICATIONS Required Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, climate science, geography, or related fields; At least 4 years work experience with REDD+ project and/or jurisdictional initiative development and implementation; Demonstrated experience with the application and use of carbon accounting approaches and methodologies; Demonstrated knowledge on forest conservation, national and international REDD+ policy frameworks, carbon standards and certification processes, primarily VCS and CCB Standards; Excellent analytical skills; Proven team player able to work effectively across cultures and within and across organizations; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Highly organized and strong attention to detail; Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to build on existing knowledge to develop new approaches. Preferred Master’s degree in environmental science, climate science, geography, or related fields; Knowledge in spatial analysis, GIS and remote sensing; Familiarity with land management project design (e.g. using Open Standards), project management and financial modelling; Working experience with indigenous peoples and traditional communities; Fluency in Spanish, Portuguese and/or French. Through science, policy, and partnerships, CI is helping build a healthier, more prosperous and more productive planet.  POSITION SUMMARY Conservation International’s Carbon Fund works with a wide range of partners to support REDD+ and Blue carbon projects and initiatives that help combat climate change by reducing deforestation and conserving critical ecosystem services. These REDD+ and blue carbon initiatives go beyond protecting forests by integrating sustainable production and focusing on improving human well-being. The Carbon Fund team of CI’s Conservation Finance Division is seeking a Forest Carbon Specialist to assist in evaluating multiple options and ultimately identify a pipeline of new investable avoided deforestation, restoration and blue carbon site- and jurisdictional-scale initiatives. The Specialist will be responsible for conducting an in-depth desk-top analysis of country, jurisdictional and site opportunities for REDD+, conducting field visits for short-listed opportunities,  and developing full feasibility assessments for selected initiatives, which might include documentation to support preparation of these initiatives to access finance (e.g VCS Project Description Document). RESPONSIBILITIES More specifically the Specialist will: Contribute to the design of an assessment framework to evaluate the national enabling conditions and barriers for REDD+ implementation; Perform a qualitative analysis focused on the country level, looking at factors such as the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution, national legal frameworks, national progress with UNFCCC elements, potential partners, history of land tenure or resource rights conflict, etc Contribute to identification of potential jurisdictional and site-based opportunities in selected countries based on desk-top analysis and interviews; Conduct a feasibility assessment for selected REDD+ opportunities based on desk-top review, interviews with relevant stakeholders and field visits, highlighting key recommendations to advance them towards full development and implementation. The feasibility assessment might include aspects such as assessing the agents and drivers of deforestation, conducting potential emissions reduction and removal analysis, estimating project and program intervention costs, identifying implementation partners and key stakeholders, assessing potential risk and challenges, etc; Preparation of other documentation to support preparation of these initiatives to access finance and other duties as assigned by supervisor.
