ABOUT THE POSITION
The Environmental Scientist II is an entry to mid-level scientist in the Environmental Scientist professional series. This role includes performing natural resource-related environmental evaluations and studies, such as environmental assessments in support of regulatory permitting; scientific and technical assessments in support of NEPA, and other multi-disciplinary evaluations; field and geospatial data collection, processing, and analysis; and report preparation. The Environmental Scientist II may specialize in one of a number of areas, including, but not limited to: environmental science, geology, oceanography, natural resources management, soil science, water quality/limnology, or related field. The Environmental Scientist II works under the supervision of more senior environmental scientists or project managers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Independently supports tasks and projects of low-moderate complexity and portions of more complex projects by applying standard techniques and methods, based on understanding of project objectives.
Receives close supervision most of the time, and receives direction on unusual or difficult assignments.
Supports a range of environmental data collection, field sampling, and implementation of monitoring programs including, but not limited to: surface water, groundwater, and stormwater sampling; soil sampling; and air quality sampling.
As part of a team, interprets and analyzes environmental data for tasks and projects of low-moderate complexity.
Supports the preparation of permit applications and other regulatory approvals.
Prepares technical and regulatory reports for submittal to clients and state/federal/local agencies.
Supports and participates in client meetings, public information meetings, and hearings.
Communicates with senior staff and teaming partners to support environmental analyses and permit compliance.
Performs other related duties as required.

Able to work on multiple projects of moderate size and complexity. Prepares sections of project scopes, budgets, and schedules for review by Project Manager. Gains understanding of basic concepts of project management through in-house and external training opportunities.
Client Engagement: Able to work collaboratively with clients and interdisciplinary teams to deliver project assignments.
Winning Work: Assists and supports the preparation of proposals and other marketing materials and pursuits, and supports routine marketing efforts including networking. Attends conferences and networking events, developing a marketing network.
Communications: Effective oral and presentation skills, as well as listening skills. Ability to present technical information understandably to groups and the public. Able to prepare clear, concise, well-supported sections of technical reports with minimal errors.
Bachelor’s degree in a field related to environmental science, geology, oceanography, chemistry, natural resources management, soil science, water quality/limnology, or related field.
3 years of relevant experience (advanced education may replace minimum experience in some cases).
Knowledge of and experience with environmental permitting, NEPA/CEQA/SEPA, as well as relevant regulations and processes, and related basic principles. Experience with field methodologies, data collection, and natural resource-based permitting processes. Familiarity with federal/state environmental regulations applicable to area of expertise.
Effective writing skills and ability to prepare written documents.
Good working knowledge of relevant integrated software applications (Microsoft Office, including Excel, GIS, and other relevant software).
Ability to independently perform detail-oriented work while keeping big-picture goals in mind.
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Able to pass a federal and state background check for project-based assignments.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in a related field.
4+ years of professional experience in an environmental science-related field.
Previous experience working in a consulting environment is desirable.
Possession of license, registration, or certification in a related field.
Commitment to professional development through publishing research papers, participating in courses, and speaking at conferences.
Technical writing, computer analysis, and project research skills.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
The position of Environmental Scientist II requires work that is varied in nature including: indoor office and laboratory work, as well as outdoor rural and/or urban physical work. Indoor work includes, but is not limited to: regularly sitting at a desk or in meetings for long periods of time, using computer, video conferencing, laboratory, and other office equipment. Outdoor physical work includes, but is not limited to: fieldwork or site visits traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in forested environments, fields, arid lands, along stream banks, and in coastal/intertidal areas. Fieldwork may be conducted at all hours, including night. The Environmental Scientist II may be exposed to inclement weather and uncomfortable working conditions.
The Environmental Scientist II must be willing and able to work irregular hours and sometimes long days, with an irregular work week including nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to: walk long distances, bend, stoop, dig with a shovel, at times carry up to 40 pounds, load and transport equipment and gear, crawl through dense brush, cross fences, and walk carrying a backpack. Employees must be able to safely operate motor vehicles in field situations.
