Internship- Unpaid Biology - Ecology

Job Description

The Bushveld Biodiversity Research Center is looking for a dedicated student to assist with our wildlife game counts. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on field experience in South Africa on a magnificent 27,000-hectare continuous game reserve with 17 different antelope species and a variety of both small and large predators!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct game counts using transect driving across the reserve.
  • Analyze camera trap footage to identify and count wildlife species.
  • Assist with withdrawals and data management.

Requirements:

  • A background in wildlife biology, conservation, or related fields (or strong interest in fieldwork).
  • Comfortable working in rugged outdoor conditions and able to spend long hours in the field.
  • Attention to detail for accurate data collection and analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small research team.

What You’ll Gain:

  • First-hand experience in wildlife monitoring techniques.
  • Practical skills in field data collection and species identification.
  • The chance to work in a biodiverse and dynamic ecosystem.

Please note that a monthly conservation fee is required, which covers the following:

  • Conservation Fees: As you’ll be staying on a wildlife reserve, a portion of your fee will go towards supporting the protection and care of the land and the species that inhabit it.

Comfortable accommodation will be provided during your stay.

  • Transportation: Pick-up from and drop-off at the Polokwane airport, weekly or bi-weekly town trips for students to restock supplies, and daily drives around the reserve.

This fee ensures that your experience contributes to both your well-being and the vital work of preserving the reserve.

Duration of Stay:

You have the flexibility to choose the length of your stay. We recommend a commitment of 2 to 4 months to fully immerse yourself in the experience and make the most of the opportunities available. This duration allows for deeper engagement with the conservation work and a richer overall experience.
