Job Description

Project Background:

The Advancing Capacity for the Environment (ACE) program supports USAID’s work in the areas of climate change, environment, energy, and infrastructure. The ACE program focuses on providing support and services to DAI’s client - the Center for Environment, Energy, and Infrastructure (EEI) within the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)’s Bureau for Development, Democracy, and Innovation (DDI). The program objective is to enhance USAID’s effectiveness, leading to positive and sustainable development outcomes globally in the above sectors through activities under four key tasks areas: communications, training, knowledge management, and facilitation/organizational development. The program provides these comprehensive services and support across EEI as a collective Center, as well as dedicated services and support to each of its three Branches—Climate & Cross-Sectoral Strategy, Natural Environment, and Built Environment—including services and support to each of the separate Divisions within each Branch.

Position Description:

The Digital Content/Social Media Specialist will serve as a key member of the communications team to ensure successful implementation of ACE’s communication activities. They will be expected to work up to 75% time. They will have the following responsibilities under supervision of the DCOP/Communications Director.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop social media strategy and plan for USAID divisions/branches supported by ACE in coordination with ACE communications team and USAID counterparts
  • Draft and post social media content for USAID Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Linked In and other platforms per an established timeline as agreed with USAID division/branches supported by ACE
  • Adapt content from ACE’s communications and knowledge products to create social media posts to share through various social media platforms
  • Ensure that social media content reflects USAID’s strategic priorities and key messages and consistently promotes the Agency’s work on climate change and in other environmental areas
  • P lan ahead and work closely with USAID focal points to push social media content through the Agency’s clearance process
  • Incorporate social media into editorial calendars for USAID divisions/branches supported by ACE
  • Ensure that social media content produced by ACE ties back to and promotes ACE-managed knowledge management platforms (e.g., UrbanLinks ClimateLinks , BiodiversityLinks)
  • Plan social media campaigns and develop social media toolkits for USAID division/branches for large events and relevant international days (e.g., Earth Day, World Oceans Day)
  • Serve as focal point for USAID on social media for ACE-supported divisions, including coordinating content submitted by other implementing partners, editing and vetting that content, and ensuring it is approved by necessary parties before posting or sending it to USAID focal points to post
  • Stay abreast of USAID’s work on the environment and related news to include in social media content
  • Ensure that social media content and toolkits follow USAID branding and marking guidelines
  • Monitor platforms and campaign performance and produce regular (e.g., quarterly) social media analytics reports and adapt approaches as needed to ensure social media content is targeting audiences effectively and encouraging engagement
  • Track and store social media content and performance metrics to support ACE’s Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) plan
  • On an as needed basis, draft and coordinate content that may be promoted on USAID social media channels, e.g., blogs, newsletter content
  • Work with graphic designers and collate/select graphics and photos to be used in social media
  • Demonstrate professionalism and diplomacy to foster an atmosphere of teamwork, productivity, creativity, and innovation
  • Support other communications tasks as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, international development, social/political sciences, or other related fields required
  • A minimum of five years of experience in social media, communications, public relations, digital content management, or related field required
  • Experience developing social media strategies/plans, producing content for, and managing social media platforms required
  • Experience in writing, editing and adapting material for online platforms
  • Experience working with USAID, or a similar donor/international organization preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English required
  • Experience working on environmental projects strongly preferred
  • Candidates must be eligible for USAID facilities access clearance, which requires that they be a US Citizen or a US Permanent Resident who has lived in the US for at least three of the last five years
