In alignment with this bold corporate goal, the Amazon Devices & Services organization is hiring an entry level Sustainability Engineer to conduct thorough assessments of the sustainability impacts of our Devices products from end to end, including manufacturing, transportation, consumer use, and end-of-life.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of life cycle assessments (LCAs) of products and services, and preferably detailed knowledge of manufacturing, design, development, and/or sourcing. The candidate should be comfortable working with imperfect data, identifying sources of uncertainty, and finding public data to fill the gaps where needed. The successful candidate must have strong analytical skills and the ability to apply systems thinking to complex, fast moving problems. The candidate should have a solid background in data analysis or engineering, and is familiarity with LCA methods. The successful candidate will work under the direction of Sustainability Scientist and help conduct electronics LCAs, include gathering data, interpreting results, and developing metrics and reports. The candidate will coordinate with cross-functional project teams (across Hardware, Software, and Operations functions) in gathering and analyzing large amounts of data.

In this role, you be part of the central Amazon Devices & Services Sustainability team. Your responsibilities will include:

• Conducting Life-Cycle Assessments for Amazon Devices and Accessories including, data collection, data analysis, data visualization, and reporting;
• Support sustainability scientists/engineers to prototype automated tools that facilitate the LCA process;
• Respond to time critical questions from multiple functional and business teams;
• Professionally communicate to senior business leaders;
• Work closely with software engineering teams to drive real-time model implementations and new feature creations.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• PhD or equivalent Master's degree plus 4+ years of research experience in a quantitative field
• Experience investigating the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to business problems and products
• Master’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Environmental Science, or sustainability related fields

• Fluency in a programming language, preferably Python
• Experience in data collection from multiple sources following best practices
• Experience in data analysis and modeling with scientific rigor
• Basic knowledge of product LCA and sustainable product design
• Experience working with stakeholders across both technical and business function

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 1-4 years experience conducting sustainability research and/or driving sustainability improvements
• Basic knowledge in electrical engineering concepts or prior experience with high-volume consumer electronics
• Understanding of hardware and software architectures including chip selection and power models
• Experience with commercial LCA software and data
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Experience working with big, messy datasets and deriving inferences from them
• Experience with AWS features (S3, Redshift) is a plus
• Strong drive to learn new topics and skills, to develop innovative insights
• Published a peer-reviewed LCA, Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), product environmental footprint (PEF), or similar
