The Hoosier Environmental Council (HEC), Indiana’s leading educator and advocate for the environment, is seeking an experienced nonprofit business leader to serve as Executive Director at our Indianapolis headquarters.
Concerned citizens created HEC in 1983 to advocate for environmentally- protective policies primarily at the state level. Today, HEC is Indiana's largest state-wide environmental policy and advocacy organization that operates on both state and local levels. HEC has been a leader in bringing visibility to such serious environmental challenges as mercury pollution, coal ash, and factory farm waste. Over its thirty-eight years, HEC has also succeeded in translating its educational and advocacy efforts into environmental gains, with forest, groundwater, and lake protection as well as expanded investment in sustainable energy and mass transit as part of its legacy.
HEC accomplishes its mission with a talented staff of seventeen professionals, thousands of supportive activists from across the state, and an annual budget of around one million dollars.

Primary responsibilities of the Executive Director include developing and executing strategic plans, empowering high-performing staff, and growing this already impactful organization in influence and resources. This position requires a dynamic, mission-driven individual who is passionate about leading hands-on operations and fostering growth, as well as developing and managing HEC programs.

- Actively oversee HEC operations, programmatic initiatives, and fundraising to ensure financial sustainability and overall long-term success.
- Work with the board and staff to develop, monitor, and adjust multi-year strategic and yearly operational plans.
- Lead the development of HEC initiatives and execute policies authorized by the Board of Directors.
- Drive development and fundraising in collaboration with the HEC Development Team.
- Actively engage in financial management through hands-on budgetary development and oversight; routinely report financial activities to the Board.
- Organize, motivate, and mentor internal team leaders to strategically increase HEC’s impact, programming, and fundraising efforts.
- Foster a collaborative working environment that encourages professional development and champions accountability among staff members.
- Communicate effectively with Board members on the status and challenges of current work, providing them with all the information necessary to function properly and make informed decisions in a timely manner.
- Maintain a strong public presence and promote a positive organizational image that increases community support for HEC.
- Exercise political diplomacy and judgement with patience and collaboration.
The ideal candidate for this position embraces servant-leadership as well as a thoughtful approach to day-to-day operational management, strategic planning, and organizational administration. The qualified candidate should have:
- Three to five years of prior executive experience as a successful leader of a nonprofit organization.
- A graduate or law degree, or an equivalent level of professional experience with substantial knowledge of environmental policy and/or science.
- Experience with environmental policy issues (3 to 5 years preferred).
- Legal or legislative advocacy experience preferred.
- A strong passion for HEC’s mission and programmatic initiatives.
- Proven abilities and experience in fundraising and financial management.
- The ability to meet clear, measurable business goals.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with organizing and mobilizing rural and urban communities to action is a plus.
