Job Description

Environmental Incentives is helping USAID’s Amazon Regional Environment Program communicate key findings, lessons, and impact about conservation and development challenges and progress across the Amazon region. Communications activities under this project will enhance learning and collaboration among USAID partners and missions in the Amazon and increase the sharing of lessons learned among USAID, regional governments, multilateral and bilateral donors, civil society, beneficiaries and other key stakeholders. It will ensure that USAID maximizes its information and knowledge assets, supports its partners and beneficiaries, and enhances its efforts to improve effectiveness and impact and become a recognized contributor to conservation efforts in the Amazon region

Environmental Incentives is seeking to hire a Communications Team Lead to join a team that is supporting the USAID regional and bilateral missions in Peru as they increase the reach and impact of conservation and development activities in the Amazon region. The successful candidate will lead management of a client relationship and collaborate with USAID staff in the Latin America and Caribbean region to develop persuasive and effective communications products that inform donors, implementing organizations, and local audiences across the Amazon of successful projects, lessons learned, project outcomes, and USAID’s technical leadership in supporting the biodiversity and the rights and livelihoods of indigenous peoples. This position can be based in Washington, D.C. or Lima, Peru.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage engagement with a client team, including scoping, production, and review of a high volume of communications deliverables.

  • Develop cohesive, adaptable communications strategies focused on clear and impactful messages with client teams.

  • Provide communications services to enhance strategic communication of the reach and impact of USAID activities in the region (e.g., analyzing audience awareness of challenges in the Amazon region, assessing media behavior of target countries, creating products tailored to audiences across the Amazon region).

  • Implement a staffing strategy to meet client needs, including managing the work of EI Communications Specialists, subcontractors, and consultants.

  • Lead development and delivery of high-quality communications products aligned with the key messages outlined in the communications strategies

  • Disseminate products through trusted communications channels that reach target audiences

  • Develop robust knowledge management platforms to store and share information within the team, with the client, and with external audiences.

  • Contribute to company-wide communications efforts and other projects, as needed

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor's degree and 9 years of relevant experience; Master’s degree and 7+ years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Degree in communications, journalism, organizational learning, education, international development, environmental science, or another related sector.

Additional Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated success building a trusted advisory relationship with client teams to assess needs, deliver high quality services, and solve problems.

  • Experience facilitating development and implementation of a communications strategy and overseeing the effective delivery of that strategy through a high volume of high-quality communications work products through all stages of scoping with the client, production, client review, and sharing with key audiences.

  • Demonstrated successful experience managing teams and individuals, including staff, subcontractors, and consultants, in alignment with EI’s Principles and Values.

  • Experience tailoring communications messages and products to diverse audiences across multiple cultures and languages relevant to conservation in the Amazon region.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree and 13+ years of relevant experience; Master’s degree and 11+ years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Professional proficiency in Portuguese-language highly desirable.

  • Experience in professional services consulting, particularly with U.S. government clients.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Professional proficiency in Spanish and English required
  • Strong interpersonal and diplomatic skills

  • Strong understanding of current issues related to conservation and development in the Amazon region.

  • Ability to quickly engage partners, consultants, and staff across the Amazon region

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to be pro-active in problem solving with excellent listening skills 

  • Demonstrated ability to advance equity and inclusion in leading the work of teams 

Unique/Specialized Job Requirements 

  • Willingness to travel based on client need and ability to attend conference calls and virtual meetings with international staff outside of regular business hours approximately 3-6 times per month. 

Base Station

The position will be based in Washington, DC or Lima, Peru. Due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, the position will begin remotely.
