Earthworks is a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, DC, with 32 employees across 14 states. We work to protect communities and the environment from the adverse impacts of mining and energy development while seeking sustainable solutions. We support frontline communities, reform government policies, improve corporate practices, influence investment decisions, and encourage responsible materials sourcing and consumption. We seek to ensure that communities’ voices and concerns are heard in the corridors of power, from the nation’s capital to state houses and legislatures.
Earthworks is looking to hire a California-based organizer to support frontline communities at risk from existing and proposed mining and promote stronger environmental policies to protect public lands, community health and ecosystems. This position reports to the Mining Program Director and will work from a remote office based in California. This position will require some travel when travel and in-person meetings can safely resume. While California is the primary geographic focus of the position, the organizer will coordinate with grassroots and regional allies in Nevada, in particular, related to lithium mining proposals in the desert region.
We are looking for candidates with experience in working directly with frontline communities affected by extraction; strong research, writing, and spoken communications skills; and ability to interpret technical and legal information related to mining. The position requires interaction with a wide range of individuals and organizations, and effective interpersonal and diplomacy skills are essential to the job. Given the historical legacy of mining and ongoing environmental injustices incurred by Indigenous, Black, Latinx and other communities of color, candidates must bring a demonstrated commitment to addressing environmental injustices and improving outcomes for communities disproportionately harmed by extraction. Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred to support work with frontline communities where Spanish is the primary language.
