The New Jersey Chapter of the Sierra Club has a vibrant and experienced volunteer base. The Chapter comprises 12 regional groups, more than 10 active state and regional committees and 20,000 members. The Chapter is a prominent environmental voice in the country’s most densely populated state and is credited with many significant environmental wins.
Scope: The Chapter Director implements policies and programs adopted by the Chapter Executive Committee, manages the staff budget, and oversees staff support for the following operational areas: conservation campaigns and legislative programs, fundraising, volunteer development, member services, budgeting and financial management and media relations.
Job activities include but are not limited to:
- Develops the Chapter’s short- and long-term strategic, programmatic and financial goals. All planning activity takes place in coordination with the Executive Committee and relevant Chapter Committees. Develops an annual plan and budget and evaluates Chapter performance.
- Plans and tracks campaigns. Helps develop, track, and manage campaign plans and goals. Ensures that Sierra Club national priorities are reflected in the Chapter’s work.
- Designs legislative programs and initiatives. Works in cooperation with the Executive Committee and/or Chapter Legislative Chair to design effective programs that reflect the Chapter’s goals and priorities. Increases the strength of grassroots advocacy efforts by recruiting supporters and collaborating with grassroots activists. Lobbies and represents the Chapter to elected officials while building the capacity of other leaders and spokespersons within the Chapter.
- Coordinates media and public relations efforts. Plans and implements an effective public relations program and develops positive, regular contacts with the media to maximize the Chapter’s credibility. Ensures that an adequate number of knowledgeable spokespersons are available to address the public and the media. Ensures that the Chapter’s digital strategy is effective.
- Supports Chapter fundraising activities. Works with the Chapter Fundraising Committee to oversee grants, appeals, cultivation of major donors and other fundraising activities. Responsible for meeting certain fundraising goals, as agreed with the Fundraising Committee.
- Supports the Executive Committee in recruiting and motivating volunteers.
- Engages in outreach and coalition-building. Ensures the Chapter and its leaders participate in meetings, task forces, and events. Builds strong relationships with the Chapter’s Groups, state and regional community leaders, coalitions, other organizations, elected officials, governmental agencies, etc. Represents the Chapter when appropriate.
- Manages Chapter staff and office. Leads staff in assigned operational or program areas. Writes, conducts, and reviews staff performance appraisals using solicited input from the Executive Committee, Chapter Chair, and/or others as appropriate. Reviews staff time reports and ensures that these reports are completed in an accurate and timely manner in accordance with Sierra Club policies.
- Oversees Chapter compliance. Ensures compliance with Sierra Club policies, with legal requirements for use of Sierra Club resources among staff, and with Sierra Club’s employment policies and practices. Supports volunteer leaders in ensuring compliance in the broader Sierra Club program. Ensures compliance with all applicable laws (local, state, and national) pertaining to
- Attends Chapter meetings. Attends monthly Executive Committee and Conservation Committee meetings. Is available as needed on weekends and after hours, to participate in key meetings with staff, volunteers or others. Extensive local and statewide travel required. Occasional national travel required.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned by Chapter Chair.
The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
- Demonstrated experience, appropriate to the position, in more than two of the following: campaign planning, grassroots organizing, training and motivating volunteers, managing teams, coalition building.
- Strong demonstrated lobbying skills, with an associated understanding of the legislative and rulemaking process.
- Strong demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
- Knowledge and background in multiple environmental policy issues/areas related to assigned programs and campaigns.
- Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working collaboratively with volunteers, staff, community and other partner organizations.
- You model effective equity analysis and practice and have a track record of operationalizing equity, and have embedded justice and equity throughout team/department policies, structures, culture, and programs.
The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:
- An understanding of New Jersey-specific issues and the New Jersey state electoral and legislative process.
- Public speaking ability and experience interacting with reporters and representatives of the media.
- Demonstrated ability and effectiveness in recruiting and empowering volunteer leaders.
- Familiarity with fundraising processes, such as direct mail campaigns, major donor campaigns, special events, and/or grant writing.
- Management experience, including supervising staff, creating and managing budgets.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $70,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience and ability.

This is a category 4 exempt, non-represented, managerial and/or supervisory position.
