Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSS) is seeking a full-time mid-level Environmental Scientist to join our team. We are looking for a motivated team player that will serve as a task and/or project manager on the Environmental Assessment Team.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Responsibilities will include task and project management, proposal writing, participation in business development, performing field activities (typically site visits), working within interdisciplinary teams, preparing schedules and budgets, coordinating with various subject matter experts, and communication with clients. Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines are a must.
Primary activities will include preparation of federal and state level environmental documentation including NEPA documents, Virginia EIR documents, natural resources studies, agency scoping and coordination letters, public involvement materials, and supporting documentation. Project meetings, site visits, conferences and other professional development assignments will periodically require overnight stays throughout the region. It is estimated that this position will consist of approximately 90% office work and 10% field work.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
-Excellent writing skills. Experience writing introductory, alternatives, and impact analysis sections in Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements a plus. Candidate must demonstrate ability to prepare professional documents, fully referenced, that are technically and grammatically correct.
-Familiarity with agency database searches, analyzing results, and writing effects determinations in agency scoping and coordination.
-Understanding of public involvement activities as part of the NEPA process and/or equivalent involvement for other municipal, county, state, and federal projects.
-Ability to take initiative and resolve problems with a team building mentality.
-Ability to develop and maintain smooth interpersonal relationships with environmental personnel at all levels.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
-A Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources Management, or other closely related field. A Master’s Degree is preferred.
-A minimum of 3 years of experience in NEPA compliance, state equivalent, environmental planning, or impact assessment.
-Prefer experience managing a small team of environmental scientists and balancing a workload of multiple projects.
-Experience developing proposals to support business development efforts is a plus.
-Working knowledge of the following: Endangered Species Act Section 7 consultation process, National Historic Preservation Act Section 106, Clean Water Act requirements (delineations, permitting, etc.), Clean Air Act, Environmental Justice, and other relevant laws and regulations relevant to the NEPA and impact assessment process.
-Good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Power Point. MS Project (or equivalent) experience preferred.
-Experience working with a diverse client base in both public and private sectors is a plus.
