The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) is seeking an enthusiastic and qualified Data Intern to join our data team within the Data & Mapping Department. A strong candidate will possess the right combination of technical skills, creativity, a collaborative spirit, and self-motivation; and will have a passion for using data to understand and address community needs, with a particular focus on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The intern will assist in supporting the data collection, analysis, and interpretation needs of the Data & Mapping team as well as other MORPC departments. The Data & Mapping team collects and maintains diverse data resources to support the work of the agency and external partners, so familiarity working with a wide range of datasets and formats is important. Increasingly, our work incorporates coding and automation for data collection, manipulation, analysis, and visualization, so experience with coding and statistical software packages (primarily R) is ideal.

The Data & Mapping team manages MORPC’s internal data resources and provides data collection, analysis, and visualization support to the agency’s other departments in areas ranging from Planning & Sustainability, to Transportation & Infrastructure Development, to Residential Services, to Communication & Engagement. Externally, we work directly with local governments, community partners, and residents to meet their data and mapping needs. The Data & Mapping team is also responsible for furthering MORPC’s Regional Data Agenda (Download PDF reader), which outlines our role as a regional leader in data and digital infrastructure.
 

Examples of Duties

  • Compiles and maintains MORPC’s data resources including demographic, socio-economic, transportation, development, land use, and other planning-related data
  • Updates existing and acquires new data resources through a combination of collaboration with external partners, sourcing of online resources, and creative problem solving
  • Organizes, transforms, and performs statistical modeling to identify trends, analyze scenarios, and develop regional forecasts
  • Assists in the development of web applications that enhance the use of and access to MORPC’s data resources
  • Supports the Data Manager in coordinating and preparing for Regional Information Data Group meetings
  • Prepares reports, visualizations, and other materials at a level suitable for presentation to government officials, citizen groups, and professional organizations
  • Responds to a broad variety of requests for information from MORPC colleagues, member agencies, community partners, and residents
  • Works with Data & Mapping staff on special projects
  • Builds job knowledge through practical work experience, educational/professional development opportunities, and building professional networks

Typical Qualifications

Qualifications (must haves):

  • Currently enrolled in a 2- or 4-year degree program
  • Experience applying data analysis and critical thinking methods to practical decision-making contexts
  • Coding, software, or database development skills (e.g., Python, R, SQL)
  • Interest in working with diverse, sometimes “messy” data from a range of sources and in a variety of formats
  • Strong analytical/problem solving abilities and genuine enthusiasm to learn new skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate with peers and external partners
  • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the region


Additional desired skills (like-to-haves):

  • Currently enrolled in an advanced degree program in data science, planning, economics, computer science, or a related field
  • Experience with application or web development
  • Familiarity with demographic, transportation, and land use planning studies and the data that informs them
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software, geospatial data, and web-mapping platforms (e.g., ArcGIS Online, OpenStreetMap, Mapbox)
  • Experience with web-based data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI, D3, Google Charts)
