The Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District is currently seeking an Environmental Health Specialist Senior. This position will be responsible for interpreting and applying environmental laws, regulations, policies and procedures in order to determine compliance and reduce risks to the public's health. In addition, primary responsibilities will include: performing periodic sanitary inspections of food services for the Food Safety Program (documenting violations and recommending corrective action), inspecting and permitting migrant labor camps, tourist establishments (including TES pools) and temporary food booths at festivals and fairs, investigating animal bites following established guidelines for confinement and quarantine of animals or testing for rabies and investigating/documenting public health complaints and enforcing compliance with regulations (sewage, food-borne illnesses, water). As well as, onsite sewage, alternative discharge and water services programs (private septic system permitting and inspections, data entry/evaluation of operation and maintenance reports, pump and haul inspections, discharge inspections, private well permitting and inspections). Minimum Qualifications

  •  Knowledge of microbiology, biology, geology/soils, hydraulics and/or knowledge of current concepts in food safety.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce laws and regulations governing both onsite and food protection environmental health programs, as well as general environmental health programs such as rabies, according to VDH protocols.
  • Ability to function as an integral part of a team, as well as to be tactful and communicate effectively in writing or orally to persons from all backgrounds and in a variety of situations, some stressful.
  • Ability to analyze information and make recommendations. Problem solving skills are essential. ? Computer competency including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office and CAD related software. ? VDH Standardized Food Officer
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain a VA driver's license and provide own transportation (mileage reimbursement provided).

This position is required to maintain a valid driver's license and adhere to VDH's driver safety policy; district travel required. ***Those candidates not meeting the VDH Standardized Food Officer minimum qualification may be considered for an Environmental Health Specialist (entry level) position and must be able to complete training in VDH Food Program and receive Food Standardization credentials within 18 months.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in environmental health, environmental science, biology, geology or related science field or equivalent work experience
  • Knowledge and experience in use of HealthSpace Venis Lotus Notes and/or Environmental Health Database (EHD)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Hold a National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) certification as a REHS and/or CP-FS
