James Madison University’s Facilities Management is seeking a Senior Zone Environmentalist to participate and lead others in the landscape maintenance of university properties. The shift is Monday – Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 3 p.m., with an altered summer schedule and overtime as required to cover special events and inclement weather.
Duties and Responsibilities
Coordinate and participate in the proper care of the landscape and grounds of the University by leading the work of 1-5 full-time and 4-6 wage and summer employees in the following tasks: grading, mowing, trimming, edging, sodding, mulching, planting, adding gravel, and application of pesticides and fertilizers as required, pick up trash in assigned areas as directed. Assists other crews as necessary to complete regular and special event assignments.
Working knowledge of landscaping practices and procedures. Knowledge of the proper handling, storage and disposal of pesticides. Knowledge of turf maintenance and installation. The successful candidate will have the ability to lead a small group of employees to perform a variety of landscaping tasks, they will have strong record keeping and organizational skills. They will have the ability to work independently and be able operate heavy equipment such as complex mowers, tractors and attachments, dump trucks, snow blowers, chain saws, sod cutters, straw blowers, hydro-seeders, weed eaters, edgers, backpack blowers, hoes, and shovels. The candidate will need to be able to do physically demanding work for extended periods of time in a variety of environmental conditions.
Must be at least 19 years old with a valid driver’s license and have had a valid driver’s license for a total of 24 months at time of hire. A Pesticide Registered Technician’s License is required for this position. Certified Fertilizer Applicator License preferred is required within one year of hire.
