Job Description

Our Midwest & Rockies Operations are currently seeking a Botanical and/or Wetland Field Biologist to support a variety of projects within our energy practice. Our energy practice includes routing, siting, and permitting of fossil fuel, wind, and solar, electric power generation, electric transmission lines and substations, natural gas pipelines, compressor stations, and other related facilities. 

In this role, we are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced botanical and/or wetland field biologist with advanced knowledge of GIS software. The primary responsibility of the position would be to setup biological field collection GIS software (ArcGIS Collector, ArcPad, or similar), collect field data, and post-process the data. 

The position would require regular field work in a variety of climates and ecological regions with a primary focus in the Midwest regions of the U.S.


  • GIS support including setting up tablets with Collector for ArcGIS for field data collection; compiling, organizing, and conducting QA/QC of data; completing spatial analyses; and creating tables and figures

  • Field data collection will include botanical, wetlands, streams, soils, wildlife, and other field surveys

  • The position will require extensive travel during the field season, with overnight travel for up to 8-10 days at a time

  • Field data analysis with an ability to produce GIS data


  • Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences

  • 3 to 5 years of experience preferred

  • A strong background of coursework and/or experience in a natural science (e.g., botany, soils, wetland science, or ecology) and field data collection

  • Data management and excellent communication skills are essential

  • Wetland Delineation Training

  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic data analyses, compile data, and write technical documents

  • Demonstrated ability to use and create spreadsheets or databases to summarize data and create tables

  • Demonstrated ability to use and create maps and organize spatial data in a GIS environment

  • Attention to detail, ability to work independently, willingness to work as part of team, and the ability to stay positive and effective during long days in the field are critical

  • Applicants must be willing to work in sometimes difficult conditions and often miles from a vehicle

  • Physical challenges typically encountered may include long off-trail hikes, steep slopes, extreme hot and cold conditions and biological hazards (animals and plants)

  • The successful applicant will be safety conscience and continually assess ways to mitigate hazards

  • Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license

  • Applicant must be able to work with and communicate with a diverse group of co-workers and clients to provide high quality and efficient work products

Other Desirable Knowledge and Experience:

  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and enjoyment of working outdoors

  • Attention to detail and good communication skills, including oral and written

  • Strong written communication skills

  • Experience setting up and using electronic field data collection devices and software (GPS units, handheld tablets, Collector for GIS, Survey123)

  • WI Assured Wetland Delineator

  • Knowledge and experience identifying plants in the field and using dichotomous keys

  • Knowledge and/or experience with botanical and other biological surveys, wetland and stream identification and delineation and a variety of vegetation sampling techniques such as line-point intercept and other methods

  • Technical writing, study plan compilation, describing baseline conditions, environmental assessment and review is also desirable

  • Researching and interpreting federal, state, and local regulations on a project-specific basis to assess project permitting feasibility and requirements; and interface with regulatory agencies

  • Working knowledge of geographic information system (GIS); environmental impact analysis related to energy and land management projects; agency consultation for regulatory compliance/ permitting; biological resources mitigation, design and monitoring; and construction monitoring; and wetland and waterway delineation and permitting, is desirable
