Position Summary

The primary function of an Environmental Summer intern is to provide supervised direct environmental support for an operational location or organization. These activities may include regulatory review and interpretation, technical calculations and estimations, preparation of applications for regulatory approvals and reports, and development of programs, plans and proposals. Specific positions may specialize in one or more functional areas, including air, water, waste, energy conservation, environmental permitting and research, social aspects, emergency and spill response and remediation.

You will receive diversified training through on-the-job assignments using the technical skills you have acquired in college. The work will develop you technically and professionally, and will involve personal interaction with both professional and technical employees. The overall knowledge you will gain during your internship and your daily liaison with the operational and headquarters’ staff groups will provide you with an excellent opportunity to develop and focus on continuous learning and growth.

Depending on your assignment, your responsibilities may involve some travel. Individuals must be willing to travel. At the end of your assignment, you will be expected to present to senior leaders within the HSE organization on the projects that you have worked on and the development you have achieved during your assignment with ConocoPhillips. 

Assignments will typically be at one of our sites located in Colorado, New Mexico, North Dakota, Wyoming, Alaska or Texas. Typical length of our internships varies from 10 to 14 weeks based on the project and your availability.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Calculating and estimating air emissions, water use and discharge, waste disposal, energy demands, fieldwork and environmental impact assessment
  • Evaluation of hazards, exposures, and general impacts associated with operation of process equipment, facilities, and projects including large-scale construction within an existing facility
  • Completion of technical documentation, consultation with agencies/contractors, and training and support for operations/field personnel in regulatory/policy compliance
  • Development and production of plans, programs, and procedures guiding regulatory compliance, proper and safe operations, and prevention of undesired consequences
  • Preparation and submission of internal and external reports and related documentation, including formal presentations to small and large groups
  • Identification and qualification of outside resources and services
  • Interfacing and coordination of information between internal and external entities, with varying perspectives and interests
  • Lead or participate in incident investigations, field audits and other incident causation and prevention activities
  • Participate in emergency planning and response activities
