Currently, HydroGeoLogic Inc. (HGL) has a position open for an Assistant Scientist in the Ballston Lake, NY area to support HGL’s growing business associated with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) contracts. The successful candidate will be responsible for the successful execution of environmental field tasks and related office work. Field tasks will include conducting environmental investigations, installing and/or operating environmental remediation systems, and collecting environmental samples as a member of a project team. Office tasks will include analyzing data, generating data tables, developing project maps and figures, and writing technical reports.

Required Skills

Must demonstrate a history of responsibility, initiative, motivation and creativity. Must possess strong written and oral communication skills and attention to detail. Must also be willing to participate in all project tasks including but not limited to fieldwork, data analysis and report preparation. Proficient in MS Office Suite and other MS Office applications.

Required Experience

This is an entry-level position and generally requires 0-2 years of related work experience. Those applying directly out of college must be able to demonstrate the ability to successfully perform the responsibilities of the position. The successful candidate shall be self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented, responsible, professionally driven, and able to interact and participate in a team setting. Strong oral and written communication skills are required. Must be willing to conduct local fieldwork, fieldwork requiring overnight travel, and office tasks.

Preferred Experience

While this is an entry-level position, the following experience is a plus:

  • Collecting environmental samples from environmental media, including soil
  • groundwater, surface water, and sediment.
  • Working in a team setting with the ability to problem-solve, take initiative, and
  • efficiently accomplish field and office tasks.
  • Writing technical documents.
  • Knowledge of environmental investigations and remediation projects regulated
  • by RCRA, CERCLA, DoD, DoE, or USEPA.

Required Education

 The Assistant Scientist position requires a minimum of a BS or BA degree in a field related to Environmental Studies such as Geology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Soil Science, Biology or Chemistry.

Required Qualifications

  • To perform the field duties of this position, the successful candidate shall be in good physical health. At times, this position will require the candidate to walk long distances, carry sampling equipment weighing up to 30 pounds, and work in rugged terrain during all four seasons.  
  • The successful candidate will be required to obtain an OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification upon employment.
  • This position will require a combination of local travel, overnight travel, and office work. Upon hiring, the successful candidate should anticipate up to 50% field work requiring overnight travel.


  • A pre-hire drug test and baseline physical are required.
  • Most positions require U.S. citizenship.
