This new and exciting leadership position reflects the growing importance of effectively managing the dual challenge of the energy transition, particularly associated with energy generating technologies beyond oil and gas and associated with decarbonising oil and gas.
This role is responsible for leading the development and establishing an understanding of environmental impacts associated with energy generation technologies and sustainability priorities to inform and shape BP’s energy transition. The role will evaluate emerging environmental and sustainability issues and establish research to improve understanding of specific environmental impacts where the issues are not well known. Working with a wide range of internal stakeholders (both leadership and technical experts) this role will inform selection of potential energy sources, associated venture investments and management strategies associated with the energy transition and inform future business strategy.
Externally the role holder will work with key stakeholders including academia, industry, technology companies and selected NGOs to help shape support to BPs energy transition and environmental and sustainability understanding. The role will establish horizon scanning for emerging issues, key analysis, tools and metrics to support critical environmental issues including life cycle analysis, severe weather and climate modelling and will sustain a process to communicate key findings as they emerge. The role will lead the development of capability to deepen critical expertise where necessary.

About the opportunity
As the environmental science director, your role will be to help us build an even deeper understanding of the environmental impacts and opportunities associated with energy generation. You’ll consider the potential impact of advances in technology throughout the global energy system and be responsible for developing technology strategies that reflect the complexity of global sustainability. And scan for and deploy key analysis, tools and technologies to support critical environmental issues.
Here, you’ll shape BP’s environmental science and technology strategy. You’ll identify ways to decarbonise oil, gas and other energy sources. You’ll lead your team through issues linked to sustainability issues including; severe weather and climate change analysis, life cycle assessments, circular economy and natural capital. Plus, you’ll collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders to develop future strategies.
What’s more, you’ll communicate key findings as they emerge to inform our senior leaders developing BP’s overall strategy. And lead relevant environmental science and technology R&D, related to emerging environmental issues. Ultimately, one of your main goals will be to support BP in maximizing environmental benefits and avoiding negative impacts.
With a BSc degree or equivalent in Physical Sciences or Environmental Sciences, you have broad experience in technology, engineering, operational or business management. We also find it highly desirable if you have a qualification, Master’s degree, PhD or similar in a relevant subject, such as Environmental Technology or Environmental Economics.
You take pride in your understanding of environmental science, from the decarbonisation of oil and gas, to energy-generating innovations. You’ve got a great overview of key science and technology, how to find out more and keep current. And strong, relevant experience in supporting energy transitions. Plus, you’re a leader who knows how to motivate and empower the whole team, as well as communicate complex analyses into critical insights that enables executives to take action.
