Job Description


The White House Farm Foundation is seeking a research assistant with background in land use planning and/or GIS to evaluate current and proposed land use in Northern Virginia. Primary responsibilities of the position will include evaluation of local land use plans, ordinances, and zoning requirements, as well as review of historic land use and proposed plans of development. Position will be responsible for synthesizing gathered information into reports and presentations. The ideal candidate will have a passion for finding the balance between human and natural habitats and must be able to work independently, to problem solve and communicate effectively, and be willing to learn and take on new tasks.


  • Bachelor’s degree in land-use planning, environmental policy, geography, GIS, landscape architecture, or a related field
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS 10x, Adobe suite including Illustrator and Photoshop, and Microsoft Office including PowerPoint
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and allocate time appropriate to projects based on deadlines
  • Strong attention to details while maintaining consistent workflow
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision and resolve issues independently
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills


  • Knowledge of cartographic principles and technology
  • Ability to read and understand land use plans
  • Experience in remote sensing and image analysis

Initial position expected to last 12-18 months, with the potential for the motivated individual to extend indefinitely on additional projects. Open to candidates seeking part-time or full-time work.
