Description of Work
The Marine Fisheries Biologist I is responsible for designing, conducting, and evaluating scientifically sound projects that address fishery management needs for the Pamlico Office of the Division of Marine Fisheries. The Biologist I is responsible for data analysis, preparation and review of technical reports, preparation and review of grant proposals for funding from state and federal sources, supporting fishery management plan development, and recommending management actions for finfish and shellfish resources. The Biologist I will participate in state fishery management activities and work with other state and regional agencies. Specifically, the Biologist I will be involved in SEAMAP and Fisheries Information Management Support (FIMMS) initiatives. The Biologist I will assist in field sampling, conduct data quality and review measures, improve data collection and corrections processes, and facilitate transfer of data to the SEAMAP database and internet mapping system, including compliant metadata. This Biologist I will operate trucks, boats with outboard motors, trailer boats, and use various types of sampling equipment. The Biologist I will participate in sampling trips in the open waters of Pamlico Sound and surrounding river systems. Strong oral and written communication skills are required for dealing with the public and colleagues.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in wildlife or fisheries management, marine biology, zoology or biology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in wildlife or fisheries management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
