We have an immediate need for a Staff Botanist/Restoration Ecologist.

Description and Desired Qualifications

Position Summary

Responsible for technical direction and resource management support to meet client, project, and office objectives. Serve as a key team member managing, leading, and supporting habitat restoration projects, biological surveys, impacts analysis, permitting, and environmental compliance. Shows extensive experience in preparing and implementing habitat restoration mitigation and monitoring plans, overseeing landscape crews, and monitoring for habitat restoration success. Must be able to identify common local vegetation types including both native and non-native plant species in a variety of habitats throughout southern California. Familiarity with botanical data collection procedures (e.g., point/line intercept transects, quadrat sampling, CRAM); statistical design and analysis, interpretation, and document presentation; experience in USFWS/CDFW documentation and consultation support; wetland and/or riparian ecology and hydrology; soil science; and/or plant taxonomy.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key member of project team for fieldwork, research, data collection, and report writing.
  • Manage small projects.
  • Manage MSA task orders, including administrative duties, such as staffing, scheduling, and budgeting to meet project requirements.
  • Provide assistance in proposal development and new business activities; assist in preparation of small to medium proposals, including budgets and schedules.
  • Responsible for new bookings with existing clients.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of local plant species and ecosystems.
  • Familiarity with vegetation mapping, habitat assessments, tree inventories, and focused/protocol surveys for special-status plant species.
  • Demonstrates experience with the CDFW Protocols for surveying and evaluating impacts to special status native plant populations and natural communities, the Jepson Manual, and other local floras.
  • Demonstrates technical expertise in one or more aspects of botany, restoration, plant ecology, and/or plant taxonomy.
  • Prepare, design and implement habitat restoration plans and habitat mitigation and monitoring plans, and associated matrices for tracking compliance.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and experience with federal and state regulations, including CEQA/NEPA, CDFW Code, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species acts.
  • Manage and implement project mitigation requirements, staffing of biologists and landscape crews, coordinate with project team and construction supervisors, and maintain schedules as it relates to construction or habitat restoration progress.
  • Conduct wetland and jurisdictional surveys or CRAM analysis, and assist with the preparation of wetland and waterbody encroachment permits (CWA Section 404 and 401, CDFW Section 1600) or prepare habitat restoration plans for riparian ecosystems.
  • Provide a high-level of quality control.
  • Demonstrate ability to complete projects on time and within budget.
  • Mentor junior staff with enthusiasm.
  • Demonstrate strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving, and research capabilities.
  • Demonstrate confidence in dealing with clients, regulators, and team members.
  • Rigorously detail-oriented and committed to accuracy.
  • Assist with administrative duties, such as training and supervision to meet project requirements.
  • Provide presentations to cross-train younger staff.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical skills and expertise in restoration, plant ecology, or botany. Demonstrates initiative, independent thinking, good problem-solving skills, excellent field skills, and educational background in plant biology. Possesses strong leadership skills, ability to work independently and as a team member, and exemplary work habits, especially related to safety, common sense, punctuality, and adaptability. Demonstrates excellent organization and communication skills and experience managing multiple staff on projects. Demonstrates strong relationships with clients and confidence in consulting with contractors, agencies, and regulators. Demonstrates strong and accurate writing skills, including experience writing habitat restoration plans. Demonstrates experience in conducting surveys and monitoring for mitigation success criteria. Demonstrates a commitment to safety and promotes safe behavior. Provides positive and enthusiastic leadership/mentoring for younger staff.

Education and Experience

Minimum BS, BA required. Approximately 3-7 years of experience in technical disciplines with at least 3 years local experience and 2 years of demonstrated ability to perform in a technical lead role. Professional membership participation preferred. Advanced degree – MS, MA, PhD, may substitute for up to 2 years’ experience. Must have knowledge and experience with state and federal ESA and MBTA. Must have experience in preparing and reviewing habitat restoration plans and specifications for compliance with approved mitigation requirements and resource agency permits.

The position is full-time with benefits. This work will be done in the office with field visits, as needed, to manage projects.
