This position functions as a staff specialist responsible for the development and implementation of the state's comprehensive Terrestrial Invasive Species (TIS) state management plan. Serves as the department representative on the TIS core team and participates on related committees and workgroups. Serves as the MDARD representative for Michigan's Invasive Species Grant Program (MISGP) including development of the request for proposals (RFP), reviewing and scoring/ranking of the proposals. Responds to questions from citizens, staff and others regarding the purpose and authority of invasive species program and the listing of pests on the restricted, prohibited or watch lists. Responsible for complex interagency coordination of activities to promote communication and effective use of resources. Develops and oversees a new statewide firewood certification program and serves on a multi-agency committee to develop policy and regulation on the movement of firewood.

Work Station:  Lansing with telecommute and/or alternative work schedule allowed.

Required Education and Experience

EducationPossession of a bachelor's degree in agronomy, agriculture technology, agriscience, biology, horticulture, botany, crop science, entomology soil science, horticulture, forestry, landscape architecture, plant biology, plant pathology, plant science, or plant physiology.
 Required ExperienceFour years of professional experience in the plant industry equivalent to a Plant Industry Field Scientist, including two years equivalent to a Plant Industry Field Scientist P11 or one year equivalent to a Plant Industry Field Scientist 12.

Preferred Experience
Four years of professional field or management experience in any environmental, biological, forestry or agricultural field, including crops and soil science, turf, ornamental and landscape management,  plant health or pest management service that involves enforcing and/or complying with the laws and regulations pertaining to plant health and pest management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and use of the incident command system (ICS)
  • Knowledge and work experience in the identification of tree species by their bark
  • Knowledge of and work experience with the identification, detection, and management of plant pests
  • Knowledge of life cycles and methods of control for significant insect pests of trees and plants
  • Experience with pest risk assessment
  • Experience writing and managing grants and contracts
  • Experience working with committees or advisory groups
  • Experience conducting outreach activities that included making presentations to groups
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint)
