Job Description

Description of Duties/Essential Functions

Under direct supervision of the Office of Community Relations (OCR) Manager in the Associate Director's Office, IL Env.Prot.Ag. (IEPA) performs beginning level routine and scientific duties related to the coordination of public participation activities for the Bureaus/Divisions of the IEPA with government entities, private groups, and the public on specific environmental programs primarily for the Northern Region of the State to diverse audiences.  Observes and assists in the interpretation of federal and state rules/regulations applicable to environmental pollution control; Observes and participates in community relations activities in accordance with Agency programs; Observes and assists in review of technical documents using risk assessment techniques; Observes and assists in responses to public inquiries including Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and complaints.  Observes and assists the Manager, OCR, and Agency Public Information Office (PIO), with activities related to the conduct of the Agency social media outreach, data visualization and other internet based outreach activities for the Agency.  Communicates in Spanish to those individuals who do not read or speak English.  Travels in performance of duties.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience: Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college with course work in physical, life or environmental sciences; requires one year of professional experience in pollution abatement or a related field.

Specialized Skills: Requires one year's experience in risk assessment; experience in giving effective presentations and preparing concise written materials; experience implementing and managing a professional social media outreach plan for a governmental entity, business, or non-profit.

Specific Job Requirement: This position requires written and verbal fluency in the Spanish language (Option SS); requires proficiency in translating written technical documents from English to Spanish, proficiency in verbal interpretation between Spanish and English and English to Spanish.  Requires a valid driver's license and the ability to travel.  Requires ability in utilizing a personal computer with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel software.
