We are seeking a Natural Resources Planner / NEPA Specialist / Project Manager for our operations in New Mexico. Candidates can reside in or around Carlsbad or Albuquerque, New Mexico. The position will likely require travel throughout New Mexico. The successful candidate will work on a variety of environmental compliance and natural resources planning projects including NEPA Environmental Assessments (EA), Endangered Species Act (ESA) Biological Assessments (BA), and Clean Water Act Section 404 and 401 permit applications, and other natural resource planning projects for a diverse clientele. Project work will include oil and gas development and transmission infrastructure development and may also include Federal land management, water resources, renewable energy, habitat restoration, and watershed planning. The successful candidate may also supervise junior staff and would participate in business and client development activities including meetings, conferences, and proposal development. 

The successful candidate will also be expected to manage planning and environmental compliance projects. Additionally, the position may also require the ability to complete data collection, coordination of field efforts, report writing, and other biological and environmental planning tasks as needed. This is a regular, full-time salaried position reporting to the Planning Program Lead. Salary will be based on individual qualifications and experience.

What you will accomplish

  • Serve as project manager or assistant project manager or NEPA Lead Coordinator for a variety of NEPA planning and development projects
  • Assist in the writing and development of environmental compliance and complex natural resources planning and management documents
  • Manage interdisciplinary projects including budgets, technical staff, and reports related to NEPA compliance documents, particularly Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements for a variety of project types (oil and gas, water resources, renewable energy, transmission, mining, and transportation)
  • Contribute to business development and marketing of SWCA’s services
  • Work closely with SWCA’s managers, directors, and principals throughout the company to promote SWCA’s business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and values
  • Supervise, mentor, and train junior staff

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resource planning and management, biology, ecology, hydrology, watershed management, or related field is required.
  • A minimum of five years experience in NEPA planning, management, and compliance. Project management experience is preferable.
  • Experience in wetland and aquatic habitat assessments, water resource management, watershed management, or habitat restoration is also desirable.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to communicate effectively.
  • Excellent organizational, oral, written and analytical skills are required.
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, and ability to try new, improved techniques, and to make independent decisions when appropriate to the situation or make adjustments as a member of a team in order to complete tasks in the most efficient and accurate manner.
