Our Environmental Planning Group prepares CEQA/NEPA documentation for a wide range of projects—roadways, rail, airports, energy/utilities and water/wastewater facilities, commercial/industrial development, residential and mixed-use projects, and educational, recreational, and military facilities.


Michael Baker is seeking full-time environmental planners located in our Oakland and Rancho Cordova offices specializing in environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act and the National Environmental Policy Act. The position involves research and preparation of interdisciplinary environmental documents in compliance with CEQA and/or NEPA, working as a member of a multidisciplinary team. The environmental planner position is best suited for a candidate with a positive attitude and strong research, mathematical/scientific, analytical, and verbal communication skills. The successful candidate will have 5–10 years of related experience and strong writing skills, as this is a primary competency required of the position, and be proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This individual must have the ability to coordinate effectively with multiple project managers and to prioritize and complete high-quality work within specified time frames. Attention to detail (including strong spelling, proofreading, and organizational skills) is required, in addition to a strong work ethic and experience working in a team-oriented environment. 


  • Manage and/or assist with complex environmental planning efforts•Manage and prepare initial studies, environmental impact reports/studies, joint documents, and other CEQA/NEPA documents for clients
  • Participate in team coordination and business development pursuits, and work with both our local professionals and those in other offices
  • Provide support to project managers throughout all aspects of environmental review
  • Coordinate with internal technical staff and subconsultants, and assist with proposal preparation
  • Manage project work, both independently and as part of a team


  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, planning, ecology, or a related field•A minimum of 5 years of related experience
  • A desire to produce first-class work products and a demonstrated personal commitment to accuracy and quality
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to quickly get up to speed on our policies, procedures, and relevant software while acquiring an understanding of the company’s service offerings and the standards relevant to our projects
