Yellowstone to Yukon is seeking a senior conservation professional to be their next Director of Conservation Programs based out of the Canmore office. This individual will report to directly to the President and will assume primary oversight of Y2Y programs and associated administration. As such, this person will be responsible for oversight and support of planning, implementing and managing projects that advance the Y2Y vision and deliver on the current strategic plan.


The Director of Conservation Programs will:

  • Work with senior program staff in development of conservation strategies and actions;
  • Oversee (3) Program Leads (U.S Director, Alberta Senior Program Manager, British Columbia/Yukon Director) as well as the Communications/Digital Engagement Manager;
  • Support programs through engagement at high levels of government (Federal, Provincial/Territorial, Indigenous) and Partner relationships;
  • Oversight and development of annual program planning, progress, and adjustments including both place-based work and thematic work;
  • Oversight of program proposals, reports and program budgets;
  • Engagement in high level fundraising including: review proposals, reports and associated budgets to ensure they are in line with plans; meet with donors and funders, strategize with the president and develop potential new opportunities;
  • Promote the Y2Y vision and programs to relevant audiences (conferences, communities, government agencies, partners, media and funders);
  • Participate in Y2Y’s senior management team and liaise with program staff accordingly; 
  • Lead the board programmatic committee and engage in Board meetings;
  • Travel within the Y2Y region as required.

Candidate Profile

  • A minimum of 15 years of successful experience managing multiple staff, preferably managing remote staff;
  • Experience in leading campaigns and affecting management and policy change;
  • Demonstrated ability to both distill complex science (biological and social sciences) and use it to guide conservation and policy change;
  • Strong knowledge and practice of engaging with government agencies and elected officials at various levels of government, particularly the federal level;
  • Knowledge about conservation and land management ideally of the Y2Y region;
  • Demonstrated understanding of working with Indigenous communities, preferably related to land and water conservation;
  • Experience developing, implementing and measuring progress on strategies and actions; Experience building and maintaining diverse and successful coalitions and collaborations; Strong experience in managing complex budgets with multiple funders; Experience in both individual and foundation fundraising;
  • Ability and interest to travel with some regularity.
