For more than 65 years, the General Mills Foundation has played a vital role in strengthening communities worldwide through targeted philanthropy that benefits people and planet. The Foundation strategically stewards charitable giving on behalf of General Mills through investments in Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and local giving in our Hometown Communities. The Foundation works under the oversight of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and in partnership with General Mills employees and other key stakeholders to advance the environmental and social impact goals of General Mills. 


The Program Analyst role is rooted in General Mills’ commitment to strategic, responsible and accountable philanthropy for lasting and differential impact. The Analyst will undertake philanthropic program monitoring, evaluation, research, reporting and analytics related to the global philanthropy of General Mills. The position reports to the senior program officer for food security and sustainable agriculture of the General Mills Foundation, located at our world headquarters in Minneapolis, MN.

Rigorous due diligence and evaluation of General Mills’ philanthropic program investments and initiatives as well as proactive immersion in the growing evidence around targeted social and environmental issue areas play a critical role to inform General Mills’ decision-making and to effectively steward Foundation and Company resources. The Analyst will assist the Foundation and engage its Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) partners in the expanded implementation of systematic methods and responsible practices for monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) aligned with an outcomes-oriented approach to programs and impact. The Analyst will develop learning plans and impact evaluation designs for each key program area based on the environmental or social issue within General Mills Foundation’s strategic focus areas as well as the Foundation’s priorities for targeted outcomes, lasting impact, and learning.

Issue understanding and impact evaluation is incorporated into each aspect of the Foundation’s programming – from strategy development to implementation to final impact reporting — in order to continuously maximize philanthropic performance and enable General Mills to know and articulate “the difference we’re making.” This commitment to well-informed and accountable impact is reflected in research and evaluation priorities to be supported by the Analyst role as follows:

  • Progress and performance evaluation 
  • Impact evaluation 
  • Knowledge development and strategy formulation 
  • Process and feedback evaluation activities 


  • Recommend and refine outcome targets and program criteria in partnership with Foundation program officers via the use of program logic models and other reasoning frameworks
  • Develop and refine qualitative and quantitative methods and systems for analyzing program impact and effectiveness for the purposes of learning and accountability by the Foundation.
  • Work collaboratively with staff and NGO partners to oversee and manage issue research, analytical and MEL (monitoring, evaluation and learning) functions within the Foundation.
  • Support the design, planning and development of convenings of key program partners and issue stakeholders to maximize learning and improvement, strengthen strategies and implementations against targeted outcomes
  • Develop and implement mechanisms to ensure program/partner activities are monitored and evaluated for continuous learning and improvement as well as for GMF grantmaking refinement
  • Support the development of impact reporting materials and information for delivery and/or presentation to the Foundation Board of Trustees and other executive audiences
  • Refine impact strategy by planning research and analysis of effective interventions to increase food security and advance sustainable agriculture 
  • Research, identify and analyze leading NGOs working in Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture to ensure the Foundation is partnered with strategic, impactful organizations.
  • Monitor issues and trends in the Foundation’s focus areas, and research relevant topics as determined in consultation with the Foundation’s program officers
  • Support the design, planning and development of convenings of key program partners and issue stakeholders to maximize learning and improvement, strengthen strategies and implementations against targeted outcomes
