Job Description

Primary Responsibilities

The Environmental Scientist position requires a detail-oriented, organized, effective communicator, with a strong focus on quality and client service and technical ability in environmental science and GIS.

  • Must be able and willing to perform field work in woodlands, wetlands, and other environments with uneven terrain in remote areas. 
  • Must be proficient in basic computer skills (including MS Word, Excel, Office). 
  • Other desirable knowledge and experience includes:  use of GIS software for mapping, interpreting aerial photography, identification of terrestrial and/or wetland plants, knowledge of wildlife studies, use of GPS equipment. 

Environmental science responsibilities will include wetland delineation, stream and lake assessments, environmental permitting, environmental document preparation, biological, water quality and geophysical sampling activities, threatened and endangered species surveys, and related environmental and natural resources tasks. 

GIS responsibilities will include map production, data input and editing of spatial and tabular data, simple spatial analyses using ArcGIS, and preparation of spatial databases for projects, including routine database management, data conversions, and map projections.  May perform field data collection using mobile GIS/GPS equipment and conduct check-in/check-out of field data. Must be able to follow documented technical procedures.

Other responsibilities will include preparing environmental and planning analyses for feasibility studies, planning studies, permitting, NEPA and other similar environmental documents. This position will support multidisciplinary teams on transportation, water and wastewater, power generation and delivery, and other infrastructure projects. This position requires work within a group and individual setting, and the ability to complete tasks within tight deadlines. *LI-KY1

Required Qualifications

  • AA/AS or BS/BA in Environmental Science, Biology, Forestry, Natural Science or related field.
  • Prefer at least one to two years practical experience in environmental science applications such as environmental impact analyses, wetlands delineation, stream assessments, or wildlife habitat studies.  GIS experience preferred. 
  • Practical experience in ArcGIS and other related GIS software for editing, database development and map production.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access).
  • Identification of terrestrial and/or wetland plants.
  • Good people skills, ability to interact with all members of the project team
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good communication (written and verbal) skills
