This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 12 months that may be extended for 12 additional months without further competition.


Salary GS-05: $33,394 (Step 01) to $43,414 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

As a BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN within the SOUTHWEST BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Conducts field sampling of vegetation of the Colorado Plateau with accuracy and precision using specialized techniques.
  • Collects and prepares data and preforms analyses regarding the environmental characteristics of plant species across the Intermountain West.
  • Samples, prepares, and performs laboratory and greenhouse analyses of plant samples to characterize genetic variation and determine specific biological characteristics. 
  • Assists in tracking and archiving all biotic samples to be processed, and preparing correspondence pertaining to technical aspects of the work, enters and checks data.
  • Enters data on a Windows-bases computer using spreadsheets and checks data for typographic errors. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Field work is physically demanding and includes walking, bending, climbing, and lifting of equipment up to 50 pounds (or heavier equipment, with assistance) when in the field, sometimes during adverse conditions. Lab work requires long periods of standing, agility and dexterity in handling samples, and hand-eye coordination.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in a laboratory of field environment. Field work involves moderate or sometimes extreme exposure to discomforts of rain, cold/hot weather, and rapidly running or icy streams and rivers. Special safety precautions are required in many cases for both field and lab work, and the employee may typically wear life jackets; special safety boots, gloves, and goggles; waders, and special organism handling gear.

Travel Required

50% or less - An average of fourteen (14) overnight travel days per month are required with this position.
