Job Description

This position will work in collaboration with the NWF Public Lands Team, New Mexico Wildlife Federation (NMWF), Colorado Wildlife Federation (CWF) and other partners), to inform and implement a focused advocacy campaign designed to bring about long-term landscape connectivity in the Upper Rio Grande region, as well as protection of specific places that are essential for wildlife, watersheds, sportsmen and recreationalists. You will help implement a campaign to achieve inter-agency and multi-jurisdictional collaboration that results in the long-term protection of wildlife connectivity, migration and movement corridors in the Upper Rio Grande. As an organizer and advocate for wildlife connectivity, you will engage with the planning and management processes of federal and state agencies, develop a sustainable coalition in support of wildlife connectivity, and educate, equip and engage diverse communities about the importance of connectivity within the Upper Rio Grande Area in order to generate public and political support.

You will report to the Public Lands Field Director based in New Mexico and work in close coordination with the Public Lands team based in Denver, CO.  You will be on the staff of the NWF’s Rocky Mountains Regional Center and will work in close coordination with the New Mexico Wildlife Federation and Colorado Wildlife Federation. You will spend significant time in the field and in travel.

 In this role you will:

Coordinate and Execute the Upper Rio Grande Connectivity Campaign Strategy

  • Work with the Public Lands Field Director, NMWF, CWF and other partners to develop a comprehensive campaign strategy for wildlife connectivity in the Upper Rio Grande.
  • Regularly coordinate and communicate with organizational partners to assure a cohesive and efficient campaign.
  • Host weekly check in calls with key partners and develop and populate a shared database of campaign progress.
  • Promote wildlife connectivity in the Upper Rio Grande through on the ground organizing of local communities including working with sportsmen and women, traditional land users, tribal leaders, small businesses, private landowners, ranchers, veterans, guides and outfitters, federal, state and local elected officials, faith leaders and agency permitees.
  • Represent NWF, NMWF and CWF at local, state and regional public and legislative meetings to advocate for the long-term protection of wildlife corridors in the Upper Rio Grande area.
  • Develop public comments and create opportunities for public engagement, support and advocacy as part of the federal agency planning processes in the Upper Rio Grande, including the Carson, Santa Fe and Rio Grande National Forests.
  • Promote protection of special interest/management areas focused on wildlife connectivity and generate public support of these areas through earned media, sign on letters, local resolutions, social media, events and public participation in agency public meetings. Mobilize public advocacy to strategically push the National Forests in the Upper Rio Grande to comprehensively incorporate wildlife connectivity into the final Draft Plans and Environmental Impact Statement.
  • Continue efforts to protect and preserve Rio Grande del Norte National Monument as a Critical Wildlife Corridor and Essential Component of Upper Rio Grande Connectivity.
  • Coordinate and work with NWF staff and affiliate communications staffs to develop and implement a comprehensive communications plan. Develop op-eds, LTEs, one-pagers, social media, videos and other relevant media resources to promote the campaign and generate broad public support.
  • Provide educational and public presentations on connectivity as needed.
  • Coordinate efforts and regularly communicate with the NWF Southern Colorado Wildlife Connectivity Coordinator to effectively implement the campaign strategy.
  • Support and advocate for federal, state and local legislative policies and programs promoting wildlife connectivity.

Promote Cross-Jurisdictional Collaboration

  • Organize and host the ongoing cross-jurisdictional Connectivity Collaborative Working Group that is comprised of federal, state, tribal, private, and NGO stakeholders. Host regular working group calls focused on advancing landscape connectivity policy, planning, science and community engagement.
  • Help organize and host the 2019 Upper Rio Grande Wildlife Connectivity Summit with elected officials, relevant agency and local leaders about key issues, policies and concerns around wildlife connectivity and corridors.
  • Work with NWF’s Tribal Liaison to develop a tribal connectivity working group that meets regularly to discuss federal, state and local opportunities as well as challenges facing tribes in the Rocky Mountain region. Meet with at least one different tribal official once per month to discuss wildlife connectivity and the importance of tribal engagement.
  • Work with BLM Planning team to implement DOI Sec. Order 3362 and implement best management strategies for wildlife connectivity and migrations corridors to be utilized on BLM lands in the Upper Rio Grande, including as part of the RGDN Monument Plan of the Taos Resource Management Plan.
  • Meet with New Mexico Game and Fish as well as Colorado Parks and Wildlife to assist, gather and interpret scientific data and use this data to educate the public the importance of wildlife connectivity. Work with these agencies to identify data gaps and needs.
  • Work to ensure the protection of Wild and Scenic eligible river segments and the protection of native fish, particularly the Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout.

Qualities we’re looking for include:

  • Demonstrated success in organizing for social/policy change
  • At least 2 years of relevant/related professional experience, including community organizing, issue advocacy, and campaign management in diverse communities.
  • Success implementing core tactics of organizing, including: grassroots mobilization, community leader engagement, earned and opinion media generation, and coalition-building
  • Experience using social media and digital advocacy tools to meet campaign goals
  • Proven ability to work successfully with internal and external partners
  • Familiarity working with chapter or affiliate organizational structures
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an effective communication style, both face-to-face and in writing
  • Flexible, innovative, and self-motivated to identify priorities and complete work independently

  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and travel
  • Licensed driver with access to a vehicle
