Helps provide strategic and operational leadership for the Wildlife team, with an emphasis on priority wildlife conservation initiatives and opportunities in Asia. Leads and manages development of projects and initiatives for impact, including their integration with relevant WWF thematic and geographic teams. Undertakes fundraising, project development, partner engagement, coordination with field teams, staff supervision, communications, and administration. Represents the organization in key external events, meetings and fora. Advises the SVP and WWF-US leadership on relevant issues, opportunities and needs.
- Strategic vision: Defines the impact and results that need to be achieved by WWF-US in Asian wildlife initiatives, including species protection and recovery, protected areas, wildlife crime, and community-based conservation needs. As part of the WWF-US Wildlife Team, works closely with WWF Network field leaders and experts to develop the long-term plans and strategies to achieve those results. Balances long-range needs with short-term demands in establishing priorities.
- Leadership: Provides the intellectual, programmatic and operational leadership for WWF-US on Asian wildlife conservation priorities, including WWF's global tiger conservation initiative. Leads planning and budgeting, oversees reporting and deliverables, ensures compliance, and monitors program & project performance to ensure maximum impact. Represents WWF-US on initiatives and partnerships, including with donors and program partners to secure needed resources and commitments for priorities. Serves as spokesperson on key issues.
- Cross program linkages and integration: Ensures appropriate integration and linkage of priority wildlife initiatives with other WWF-US Goal and Influence Teams and WWF Network programs. Identifies opportunities for strengthening WWF-US conservation work through creation of synergies and joint strategizing.
- Creativity and innovation: Identifies and creates solutions to the political, social, scientific, and management issues that confront WWF's wildlife conservation work in Asia and elsewhere. Develops innovative approaches to addressing challenges. Ensures that learning and best practices are shared across portfolios and geographies.
- Technical and scientific expertise: Serves as the organization's lead for technical and scientific input on Asian wildlife conservation priorities. Provides technical assistance, scientific information and policy advice to internal and external audiences and maintains up-to-date knowledge in relevant technical areas.
- Fundraising and communications: Serves as a champion for Asian wildlife conservation issues and priorities. Identifies and leads major fundraising efforts in conjunction with Development, Public Sector Partnership, and Private Sector Engagement teams. Engages conservation partners, policymakers, and institutions in building public awareness of and commitment to WWF wildlife conservation priorities. Works closely with communications teams to raise the profile of Asian species and related wildlife conservation issues through social and traditional media and other external channels.
- Team building and management: Develops and leads a high-performing team to deliver impact and results. Supports staff development including defining growth opportunities and career pathways. Works across the organization to ensure the best talent is brought to bear in cross-cutting initiatives and creates new opportunities for appropriate staff participation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- A graduate degree or equivalent experience in the field of wildlife or natural resource management, conservation, ecology, conservation science, policy, international development or related field required.
- Minimum of 12 years of experience required, including leading and managing teams and complex conservation projects at the landscape or larger scale.
- Extensive knowledge of, and on-the-ground field experience with, Asian wildlife conservation is required.
- Knowledge of and experience with tiger conservation priorities strongly preferred.
- Proven ability and experience in networking and partnership development with international conservation organizations and agencies, governments, and diverse stakeholders is required.
