Under general supervision, performs guard and patrol duty on an assigned shift to safeguard persons and property in City-owned facilities and areas while carrying a firearm.
Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To
Patrols assigned stations or areas on foot and/or by vehicle to protect property against vandalism, unlawful entry, theft, fire and other dangers to enforce ordinances and regulations pertaining to use of public facilities, and to maintain order for the protection and safety of visitors, patrons, employees and others. Maintains order and enforces park rules and other laws by taking actions ranging from counseling, warning, issuing citations, or arresting persons whose behavior harasses or endangers others, disturbs the peace, or threatens damage to property. Provides information and assistance to the public, including answering questions regarding programs and services, directing persons to specific facilities and events, searching for lost children and administering first-aid assistance in emergency situations. Regulates traffic, enforces parking and other municipal regulations pertaining to public use facilities and areas, and issues notices of violation. Reports fires and performs emergency firefighting and/or rescue duties until arrival of fire department units. Maintains logs of patrol activities and prepares written reports of incidents, accidents or other occurrences. May be assigned to serve in a lead-supervisory capacity over a departmental unit of security guards. Performs other functions as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work of this class involves responsible public contact, occasionally in emotionally tense situations, requiring maturity, an above-average degree of tact and responsiveness, and the use of considerable personal judgment in safeguarding public property and assisting and protecting visitors, patrons and employees at public use facilities and areas while carrying a firearm. In the enforcement of rules of conduct, incumbents must exhibit skill in identifying behavior potentially dangerous to others or destructive of property. Incumbents must exercise careful judgment in distinguishing between circumstances in which counseling and warning will serve to maintain order and those in which the powers of ejection, detention or arrest must be applied to prevent injury to others or damage to property. Incumbents are not sworn police officers, but are limited function peace officers while on duty and for the purpose of performing their primary function.
One year of experience involving extensive public contact in security, military police, probation, correctional or related work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below:
Knowledge of: the methods, techniques, practices and procedures involved in safeguarding property against fire, theft, vandalism and illegal entry; and all related laws, rules, regulations, investigation and enforcement procedures and legal requirements.
Ability to: learn and interpret various laws and regulations, investigation and enforcement procedures, and report-writing requirements; obtain information through interview and observation; analyze situations quickly and objectively; cope with emotionally tense situations; control unruly or hostile individuals whose behavior threatens the peaceful pursuits or safety of others; express ideas clearly and concisely orally and in writing; keep records and prepare reports; and develop skill in the operation of radio receiving and transmitting equipment.
Skill in: identifying behavior potentially dangerous to others or destructive to property.

Must possess a high school diploma or acceptable educational equivalent, must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment, and must be of good moral character and sound psychological capabilities as determined by an extensive background investigation and psychological screening performed by the Santa Ana Police Department.
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License; willingness to work any shift, rotating work schedules, or irregular duty assignments; satisfactory record as a law-abiding citizen; and a state of health and physical condition necessary to satisfactorily and safely perform assigned duties.
NOTE: Some recruitments may require bilingual capability in English and one other language as an added minimum qualification for some positions.
Upon selection, successful candidates must complete a law enforcement training program approved by the Chief of Police, an in-house training program, and must obtain and retain PC 832 Arrest and Firearms Course certification.
