Job Description

VHB’s growing Raleigh office is seeking talented students Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Interns to join our team in January 2019. Position allows a flexible schedule adjustable for school (for example either 4 or 6 hour shifts if needed). The qualified candidate will contribute across multiple project teams and provide a range of services relating to GIS, transportation, safety analysis, and environmental projects. Note this student internship is for undergraduate or graduate students.

Together, we work to improve mobility, enhance communities, and promote economic vitality, and balance infrastructure needs with environmental stewardship.

Responsibilities would include:

  • GIS data collection and mapping
  • Review and synthesize documents
  • Synthesize, manage, analyze, and visualize various data sets
  • Report writing, editorial review, and research support

Skills and Abilities: 

  •  Strong skill set of written and oral communication, critical thinking, and time management
  •  Ability to work collaboratively, as well as independently with guidance
  •  Background experience working with ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) and cartographic production preferred although not required 
  •  Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, especially experience with Excel
  •  Experience with ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Server, AutoCAD, or Adobe InDesign is preferred, but not required
  •  Working knowledge of Shapefile (SHP) and File GeoDatabase (GDB) file formats is preferred but not required


  • 0-1 years of GIS/Transportation experience
  • Working towards B.S. or M.S. degree in the fields of geography, cartography, planning, engineering, computer science, transportation, or a related field
  • Experience with Esri ArcGIS Desktop software (version 10.3 or above)
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Certificate is preferred, but not required
