Focused on China, the Scientist will be a key contributor to EDF’s efforts to promote a series of international studies aimed at better understanding the magnitude of global oil and gas methane emissions and identifying mitigation opportunities. The Scientist will also play a key role in coordinating and managing partnerships in China to support cutting-edge scientific research projects.
This position will work in close coordination with EDF science, industry engagement, communications, and policy/technical teams in both the U.S. and China to support these efforts and contribute to EDF’s global methane and environmental goals. This position will directly report to EDF’s Chief Scientist in the U.S. with a close working relationship with EDF’s China Chief Representative in Beijing. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated deep understanding of atmospheric science / atmospheric chemistry, strong political and cultural sensitivities, solid understanding of oil and gas/energy/environmental issues and China’s political system, strong communication and relationship management skills, and high degree of comfort working in a matrix organization.
This role can be based in New York City, NY, Boulder, CO, Boston, MA, Washington, DC, Austin, TX or San Francisco, CA or Beijing, China.
• Provide scientific leadership and support for the design and execution of EDF’s emerging studies on China methane emissions associated with the country’s production and distribution of oil and gas, including research partnerships with China’s major oil and gas industry players and research institutes.
• Coordinate, evaluate, and support research projects including, but not limited to, studies on air quality measurement, water and soil pollution prevention and control associated from oil and gas development in China.
• Develop and manage relationships with China’s scientific community, coordinate and ensure rigor of scientific initiatives with a diverse group of stakeholders including industry, academics, and the public sector.
• Support the analysis of data collected through established and novel sensing technologies deployed to detect and quantify methane emissions from global oil and gas operations including China.
• Analyse and monitor the progress of climate science and environmental science in China and keep supervisor and team members timely informed.
• Ensure scientific accuracy of EDF generated materials related to China.
• Conduct independent research and publish regularly in peer-review literature.
• Represent EDF, as appropriate, attend external meetings and interact with scientists and the scientific community at large.
• Work with colleagues and partners of varied backgrounds and experience.
• Synthesize, interpret, and communicate scientific data in an advocacy setting.
• Support fundraising initiatives.
• A PhD in environmental science, physical sciences or engineering (e.g., chemistry, atmospheric science, chemical engineering) or related field with significant experience in atmospheric measurement techniques or emissions quantification. Experiences with methane measurement and/or oil and gas industry is a plus.
• Experience with academia, public sector or business with desire to transition to policy-relevant research and science-based advocacy.
• Interest in expanding expertise and exploring and developing in new areas.
• Demonstrated scientific expertise, including but not limited to a record of scholarly publications and/or involvement in scientific panels.
• Proven ability to manage a diverse workload.
• Strong relationships building and management skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic, and entrepreneurial environment.
• Ability to travel and work across different time zones.
• Fluency (reading, writing and speaking) in English and Mandarin Chinese required.
