Job Description

GSI Water Solutions, Inc. (GSI), is seeking a skilled project manager with experience in California water supply issues to help manage a growing base of groundwater projects in our office in San Luis Obispo, California. The position also will help support our business efforts in southern California.

The successful candidate will be a California Professional Geologist (PG)–and, preferably, a Certified Hydrogeologist (CHG)–or a California Professional Engineer (PE) in civil engineering with a water resources specialty. The candidate must have a proven track record of managing a thriving practice in the areas of water supply development, water resources planning, aquifer/basin studies, and groundwater management. The most qualified candidate will be a self-starter with an entrepreneurial character, be service- and action-oriented, and understand the technical complexities of groundwater management issues in California. A solid understanding of and experience with the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) are required.

 Managerial work will include:

  • Responsible for the management, budget, performance, billings, collections, and schedule control of multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Responsible for mentoring and performance reviews of junior and mid-level staff members.

  • Responsible for independent and internal team collaborative implementation of strategic planning.

Business development work will include:

  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with current and prospective clients.
  • Being responsible for and proficient in all phases of business development activities.

  • Attending and presenting at professional conferences.

  • Identifying new clients.

Technical work will include:

  • Development, oversight, and delivery of technical groundwater management, water supply development, water resources planning, and SGMA-related projects.
  • Management of projects involving basin analyses, aquifer characterization, and well design, construction oversight, and testing.

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to address groundwater issues and problems.

  • Generating complete technical reports and proposal materials.

  • Providing review and oversight of project work and reports prepared by junior and mid-level staff members.


  • MS degree in hydrogeology or geology; or MS degree in civil engineering, water resources engineering, or environmental engineering; or, at a minimum, BS degree in natural resources planning or a closely related field
  • California PG (preferably CHG) or California PE in civil engineering with a water resources specialty

  • 15 to 20 years of water resources planning, water supply development, and/or groundwater experience, primarily in California, with established relationships and client network

  • Extensive central and southern California experience and water resources network are strongly desired

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Understanding of the water resources sector in California, including market, competition, and clients

  • Ability to work independently

  • Experience in the water resources consulting field is preferred
