Field Hydrogeologist

OBG is seeking a Hydrogeologist with 1 to 5 years of relevant experience based out of our Chicago, IL or Milwaukee, WI offices.  The successful candidate will work with a diverse team of scientists and engineers across our network of offices. The individual should be able to apply their experience and skill set to an array of media (e.g., vadose zone, sediment, soil, groundwater surface water interface), contaminants (e.g., inorganics, organics, and chlorinated solvents), and sources (e.g., coal combustion products, manufactured gas plants, chemical industry).

This position is technical in nature, focused on supplementing existing technical resources at an experience level for an expanding technical role as a member of our team. We will provide the successful candidate opportunities to expand their skills in a variety of service areas. The primary duties of the hydrogeologist will be to assist Project Managers with field studies, data collection and compilation, as well as hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, and developing site conceptual models. 

Qualified candidates will have a strong technical focus with and emerging project management experience, and have demonstrated abilities in:

  • Critical thinking abilities for data analysis and group participation for report completion based on evaluation of environmental data and application of regulatory criteria.
  • Experience in field collection of soil, groundwater, sediment, and/or vapor samples.
  • Experience in geologic well logging, monitoring well construction and development
  • Experience with aquifer testing (e.g., pump tests, slug tests) and analysis a plus
  • Proficient with field equipment and meter use, calibration, and troubleshooting (e.g., PID, gas meter, pumps, in-line water quality probes, surface water monitors)
  • Proven track record of implementing site characterization field work following standard operating procedures / client guidelines and working safely.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of federal, state and local environmental regulations and programs 


  • BS/MS in hydrogeology, related engineering or science degrees may be considered
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel required.
  • Professional registration(s) a plus
  • 1+ years environmental consulting experience
  • Active participation in professional associations and other organizations a plus
  • OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour certification preferred
  • Ability to travel 50-75% of the year
  • Requires long periods of standing walking over rough terrain, lifting, reoccurring bending in outdoor climates.
